I have just checked a manual for the forks using a BMW workshop RAM disc and they look as if they have identical components so the damping is probably with both legs. I would have thought only using one leg for the damping would/could lead to some 'interesting' handling.

Yes there are damper cartridges in both forks, however the one for the right side fork has different internals in it. That's why it takes less oil on a oil change(when not full disassembled)
I have a page excerpt from the shop manual I'll email to you since this site doesn't host attachments. It does briefly describe the differences in the damper on assembly.

Thanks for replies. I remember finding info saying one of the damping cartridge is a dummy it has no valves in it just an unrestricted piston. I think it's the right as it has slightly more oil . The cartridges are not able to be disassembled so diagrams show no internals I think it was someone who put the dampened cartridges into both legs for as a suspension modification.
Will do some more research. Cheers AB
