Friends:
After start up, the hazard light (exclamation mark in a red triangle) on the instrument panel of '93 K1100RS normally stays on until I tap both brakes. Then it normally turns off (just like the ABS light stops blinking after moving a few feet) per the BMU protocol. Just recently it hasn't been turning off, and after spot checking I've found that my front brake isn't triggering the brake light. The rear brake performs as expected. Both brakes work fine.
So 1). thank you BMU for letting me know, and 2). what's the troubleshooting routine for this? I recently rebuilt the front brake MC so logic tells me I'm somehow responsible for this. Thanks. - Blake _________________ Blake

Find the front brake switch connector under the tank.
Gray/red and green black wires. Short the bike side of the connector to see if that lights up the brake light and makes the BMU go out.
Or see if the brake switch side of the connector has continuity when the brake is applied.
Cheaper non-BMW switch:

The BMU fitted to most K bikes from the K75 through to the K1100 was a superb addition to safety. Now I have sold my last K75 and bought a R1100rs that is one thing I miss more than anything else.
Why ditch it, a safety device such as that, is as far as I know, never been used by any other manufacturer. It is unique. It would not cost a lot for one to be fitted at the factory from new instead of silly accessories such as heated seats and tyre pressure monitors that have a habit of going wrong anyway. A real retrograde step. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I'm pretty sure the CANBUS systems monitor that stuff now. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have never ridden a bike with Canbus but they were never fitted to the R1100/1150 bikes it was just dropped. No explanation given. I could understand it if it were a failure or a source of problems, but as far as I know there wasn't.
Like wise the auto switching off the indicators after a turn had been made. With thick gloves it isn't always easy especially in bad weather. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

BMW gave up the option of auto-cancelling turn signals with the R bikes when the went to the mechanical speedometer assy.
My R1100 was fitted with a Kisan SM-5, so mine has some form of auto-cancel.
As far as the BMU, I don't know why it was dropped. _________________ Ride safe.

Did the earlier R bikes have BMUs? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I didn't see any component listing for one in any of the wiring diagrams.
The BMU part# doesn't show use in any other bikes besides the K75 thru K1100's. _________________ Ride safe.
