How on earth do you get the circlips back on over the spring washers??

Spring washers? They're just flat washers.

Get the circlip started then line up a small screwdriver on the center of it and then give the screwdriver a good whack.

Just need a little more pressure when putting the clip on, it can be done.
Yes, the wavy ones are what are sold now, they also help reduce side/side rotor noise. Like the spring buttons help reduce the radial(forward/rearward rotational) noise.
