On account of the wifey throwing out my 1992 k11 tools, i no longer have the dipstick. K100 section of manual lists 165mm from top of lip to max surface level, cool engine. 175 mm is lowest. Is this right for the K11 also? Not one I want to get wrong. C'mon, u can take the time to check it. pls

The K1100's don't have dipsticks, they have a plain oil filler cap. The oil level is determined by looking at the glass window on the right hand side of the engine block.

Whoops. Sorry bout that. Was referring to gearbox oil level. Pretty sure mine is overfilled as PO said he was a mechanic and had done the gearbox oil before I picked it up. Has been busting all round the gasket slightly and my measurement on the above dipstick size, has it overfilled by 10mm or so. Used to be a dipstick gadget in my kit.

The transmission takes 0.85 liter or 1.8 pt. I don't have my tool pack handy, maybe someone else can measure theirs.

I ended up making one a few years ago referring to the specs in the shop manual. I followed something like this:

https://youtu.be/ymZVTKgWSPw

When you say "busting all round the gasket slightly", what gasket? Are you sure it's gear oil?

If the PO had changed the gear oil and re-used the crush washer, it's possible that oil could be seeping/leaking from it not sealing well.

Scottisha, if it is truely overfilled as you say/suggest, you are going to have to remove the plug and drain the oil out anyway... why not just drain it out in a clean pan, then you can measure the correct amount to put back in. 850ml.

The correct trans oil level is 115mm below the rim of the fill hole.

The part # for the K1100 trans dip stick is 71112316195. $8 in the US.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Have made one out of a zip tie. Works a beaut and replacements are easily found. Just gotta lube rear splines and hack up a chinese master cylinder for the rear, then back on road.

Don't let any part of that break and fall inside the engine. If you do, you'll be cursing about it for years to come. Better to get a slim length of aluminium or steel and use that instead. Smile

The one that was supplied with my K1100 and can be used on all previous K bikes came in the shape of a 'C' spanner used for adjusting the rear standard shock.

The long handle was dipped into the gearbox and the shoulder of the spanner was rested on the lip pf the oil filler hole. (it cannot drop into the box).

At the end of the handle was an engraved line 10mm from the end. That was the max and minimum marks.
