Folks,
Now that Ziggy is running again I'm getting to back burner projects like reviewing the most thoughtful part of BMW engineering on the K1100LT
The backrest from the top box flew off on US-101 @ 70mph. Amazingly I was able to retrieve it and it does not appear to be damaged.
I'm thinking about replacing the velcro with 3M Duolock.
Dont really know what to do about the two lame screws that seat directly into the rubber backrest (0.8mm thread). I think BMW had something like crazyglue holding everything together so I might just do that.
Any other ideas for a more solid mounting?
Sanjiv
P.S.
Here are some pics to help you visualize what I'm dealing with

P. P.S. The 4" Polk DB401 speakers that I had put in years and years ago still sound terrific so I'm hoping everything else works out. _________________ 1997 K1100LT "Ziggy" _GarminGPS_Corbin saddle_K Guards _Hyperlights_Fog lights_Eastern Beaver Relays_Cee Bailey_4"speakers_Michelin PR4's_MoS2_Spiegler lines_TPMS_VDO

That backrest was designed by the award winning helmet lock team.
Duo-Lock works OK. I use it along the bottom of mine. Maybe not the best solution but better than the worthless factory hook & loop type stuff.
Not sure what to do if the screws are stripped. Just an idea but what about a bunch of Pop Rivets? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks Drake,
Ordered Duo-Lock & a Pop Rivet kit. I needed the excuse to buy a new tool
I am a bit skeptical that the pop rivet would work on a soft material like the backrest but will try it and report back.

Yeah, I think you're right about Pop-rivets not working since the foamy stuff is so soft.
Another idea: Drill out where the old bolts were and epoxy some M5 threaded rod into where the old bolts used to stick out.
BTW: I checked and MAX BMW has them new with no tax and free shipping for $82:

Does MaxBMW have the radials you recommend? I can't find them. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

I have no idea. I get my tires from Rocky Mountain ATV these days. I would NEVER buy tires at a BMW dealer. Way high prices.

MAX is a good place to get OEM parts in the US though. No tax and free shipping on any size order. A&S Cycles does that too. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
