I had something really weird happen the other day. The shift indicator on the instrument panel would only display 0 or 1. If I shifted all the way down it would show 1, then shifting up to any gear would only show 0 and neutral light would come on no matter what I did. When I stopped the bike to park it I had a bit of trouble putting it in neutral so I could lift it up on the center stand. Eventually I managed to get it to neutral and on the stand.
Is this an indicator of something bad in the transmission? _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Yes, this did happen after riding in light rain. But I can't even find a mention of a GPI switch in the repair manual. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

You don't say which manual you're looking in.
If Clymer, it's page 193 - gear position switch. Don't have the BMW manual handy - but it should be in the transmission section. It's called "transmission indicator" in the fiche.
If you think you need a new switch, it's available from Max for $145.+. Motorworks has it for about $86.83 and a bit of shipping.

The repair manual means the BMW manual, and the phrase "transmission indicator" is not there. Severely pathetic of them to exclude it, if you ask me. But it's Germany. <sigh> _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

Search the BMW K1100 repair manual for "gear indicator." You'll get two hits:
One in the instrument cluster section (62.10) referencing the circuit board and another in the gearbox section (23.14) where it says to remove it.
Given that there's just two screws holding it on do you really need a manual to tell you how to remove it? _________________ 93 LT (x2)

23.14 says this: "Switch for gear indicator removed." In other words, it says that it already has to have been removed, not how to remove it, and it doesn't even show a picture of WTF that is about. That page is about removing and installing a shaft sealing seal and a ball bearing on the intermediate shaft.
And yes, most people need instructions on how to R&R the switch, including the need to remove the transmission and drive shaft and, more importantly, WTF you are looking for if you need to do that, like a proper diagram.
Of course, what the hell do i know, I've only worked on military medium and heavy transport helos and a shitload of civilian aircraft for decades, with properly written maintenance documentation that doesn't assume people are telepathic to ensure they wind up spending money unnecessarily at a dealership... _________________ To err once is human. The requirements for aviation maintenance documentation are much more stringent than for consumer vehicles. If the K1100 repair manual had to be FAA compliant then it would be much more detailed and about 30 times as many pages, probably more.
It's rather silly to compare motorcycle maintenance to aviation maintenance. Many orders of magnitude in difference. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

About as silly as berating someone who expects BMW to meet the standards of Chinese scooter manufacturers in their documentation... _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.

The GPI might start working again when it dries out.
To replace the GPI you do have to remove the swing arm to get to the switch..... _________________ Ride safe.

Yes, that's what I am thinking as well, if moisture causes it, a switch usually works fine when the moisture disappears. I'll see what happens, if not then I will have a chat with my mechanic about it. Thanks. _________________ To err once is human. To do so repeatedly is incompetence.
