Just bought me a 1995 K1100LT in excellent condition. Previous owner was a 73 year old man here in Berlin, Germany who bought it sight unseen and had it shipped, only to find out he's too short to ride it. I got an excellent deal, below trade-in-value. Don't find these deals very often and when I do I snap them up.

Thank you. That's the plan, once I work out the minor kinks. Smile

What's the color scheme code under the seat?

Well, this is weird. 689 comes up as Mystic Red but there is not a single molecule of red paint anywhere on the bike. The luggage matches. I wonder if the color scheme codes in Germany are different. The only match I can find for my color on the web is 708 Navana Violet.

Sure looks black to me in the picture. Note that 679 (Classic Black) is a metallic dark graphite color but if you look very closely at the paint you'll see that it contains violet and green flecks in it so under different lighting conditions by different eyeballs the perceived color might vary.

Color scheme codes are the same for all countries.

I get what you mean but mine is definitely violet. You can argue that with my painter wife. Smile

This pic at a different angle shows the color better. Look at the tank paint.

Wasn't there a K75 model with a similar colour tank?

OK. That's a dark violet. Just didn't come out well in the first pic I guess.

Very odd that it would have the wrong paint scheme code of 689. Hard to imagine that someone would keep the old paint code sticker if they repainted it so I'd guess a mixup at the factory when the bike was built.

If a bike's been repainted you can usually tell by looking at the insides of the side/battery covers or underside of the gas tank..

Finally figured out how to decode my weird German VIN. The last 7 digits on what would be the US VIN are at the beginning.

So I found out mine is a Special Edition model with ABS II and the color code on the frame is wrong. It says 689 but the color is 708, Navarra Violet.

Options are:

X352A Special Model Special Edition
Q473A Package K1100LT Special Edition
X519A Heated Handlebar Grips
X524A Anti Block System ABS
X582A Catalytic Converter With Mixture Control
X671A Engine Protection Bar
X701A Power Reduction Of 15 KW
X726A Radio Factory Prep Without Speaker

That X582A, I thought was not required in Germany at the time. And X701A power reduction? i wonder if that can be removed with a chip change on the Motronic unit.

X726A explains why the dealer could not get me the radio unlock code. I will have to pull the radio, get the mfg and serial number and see where I can find the code. It must have been installed between then and now.

Ping.

X701A Power Reduction Of 15 KW

This shows on in the VIN database for my bike. Anyone knows how to remove this restriction? Something tells me it needs to be reprogrammed in the ECU. It is a 20 hp reduction on the engine and I'd like to get it back. Smile

It's always been my understanding that the radio install was done by the selling dealer, not the factory. IE part of the "dealer prep"

I wouldn't be surprised if that 'power reduction' option is on every 1100 engine.

I've read over the years that after the '85 model of the k100, BMW changed the cams to reduce power a bit. Maybe with the 1100's they were able to do in the Motronic, I can't say.
I have read that BMW has 'detuned' engine output to satisfy insurance regulation changes, and it wasn't limited to only the K-bike engines either.
As I query motorcycle de-tuning, just about every manufacturer is doing it. Overbuild the components, then de-tune it. The reasons vary, but longevity, and reliability seems to be the common comments that I have read, along with government regulations....

BMW even created a concept car with a 100hp K1100 engine de-tuned to 82hp. The car never made it to production.

Sorry to get long winded here, in short you would need to either 1) find someone to reprogram your motronic(if it's even possible) or 2) install a totally different engine control system.

Thanks Scott. I found a company in Austria that sells tuning chips for the Motronic ECU on the K11 and other bikes and learned that the de-rating is done in the ECU programming on this bike. I ordered the chip for my ECU today and will report after installing it. So far all the reviews from other buyers are 5-star positives. They've sold thousands of the EPROMS for many different model ECU's.

On the radio, after all the hassle I went through pulling it out, I checked my tool kit the other day and lo and behold the tools to remove the radio were right there the whole time. Embarassed

Chip arrived in a nice anti-static package. The hard part was opening the Motronic unit. The install video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD8jeLqek-Y) shows an easy open, but in fact my ECU was sealed with a very strong bead of silicon glue. I was kinda worried about forcing it, but it worked and I opened it. In the video the EEPROM is mounted horizontally on the circuit board but on mine it is vertical. Other than that the video is accurate.

The bike started up just fine. Tomorrow I will ride it to work. The seller of the chip says it removes the 15kw factory derating of the engine, so I am looking forward to the additional 20 hp. He claims this:

- no more constant running jerking (KFR)
- significantly better acceleration
- better traction and more agile handling
- clean combustion and smoother engine running
- longer range due to less consumption

Not sure about the traction claim but we'll see about the rest.

I finally watched the video, Scott. That is a sweet little ride, I like it better than the new Mini, which can be totally confusing to ride, in typical German engineering style. I loved the way the two pax slid into the "rear" seats! And very roomy in the rear! I wonder what happened to the prototypes...

So far so good. Definitely more torque, peppier, smoother acceleration, better throttle response. Next tank refill I will start to keep track of fuel consumption.
