Is it possible?
Took the shock off to get access to the rear caliper. Manual said take the rear wheel off but the shock seemed like the easier option
So the shock is a bit of a shambles. Paint flaking off and a couple of fairly rusty coils. I can get it power coated locally no probs but since I'm taking the spring off I just wondered if an overhaul of the rest of the shock is possible? _________________ Be gentle it's my first time (owning a BMW) |

If it's a stock shock then it's garbage.

Look at RAM/Realm shocks from BSK.
Also look at Motobins, Motorworks and James Sherlock. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the suggestions.
I might have to go with just fixing up the existing spring for now though
Even a new spring is quite pricy and I think I also have an exhaust problem!
It's spitting but it's not a gasket as far as I can tell. Sounds like it's coming from right where the pipes connect to the engine. From the manual it looks like it's similar to other bikes I've had where it's just wee brass o-ring sort of things that seal it there but it sounds a bit to poppy to be just that?
What you reckon? I heard from a mechanic that these exhaust systems go at that point.
Still I'm just glad to get it on the road again! _________________ Be gentle it's my first time (owning a BMW) |

There are four copper exhaust gaskets, kind of a pain to get to you have to loosen and remove the 8 nuts to lower the pipe to replace them. Might help to loosen the mount at the left rear footage to allow it to move around a bit.
I used a little anti-seize to kind of glue the copper gaskets to the pipe and then slide them in place. I also replaced the nuts just because I was there. Beemer Boneyard for the parts I believe.
One or more of mine were leaking based on carbon deposited on the pipes. As soon as I replaced them the bike was significantly quieter, must have been leaking for a while. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Ok thanks I'll give it a go.
I think i also have a side stand problem!
The stand is missing the rubber stopper and resting on the underside of the exhaust.
Wonder if the guy that secured it on the ferry bent the bracket. He was cranking the ratchet strap down on the side stand side of the bike which i thought was odd. I thought they were meant to crank it on the other side? That's how i used to do it anyway when i was securing my bike in a van. _________________ Be gentle it's my first time (owning a BMW) |

That's a pretty minor bit - and last I looked, readily available from any of the bike shops over there. _________________ Jim

Sorry, i phrased that badly.
The stopper is there and looks to be in reasonable condition. It's just that the side stand is not resting on it when it's up. _________________ Be gentle it's my first time (owning a BMW) |

Just be careful taking out header pipes.
I ended unscrewing studs as bolts were stuck.
I should have reddened up the studs but I didnt have a proper way
of doing this.
Threads were damaged and I had to get son-in-law to clean them out
with a reamer.
My exhaust cracked where the 4 go into one.
This is a common issue _________________ 1994 K1100 LTSE + Blackbird |

Done that before myself.
Fortunately the studs came out without a fight though so the threads were ok.
I used to have a wee gas soldering iron for that sort of thing. Didn't heat them till they were glowing but seemed to do the trick. I'll have to look on screwfix and see what's available.
Any idea about the side stand?
It def wasn't doing that before the ferry trip so i reckon they've bent the bracket which looks like i need to replace the whole bracket / centre stand assembly. _________________ Be gentle it's my first time (owning a BMW) |
