My 96 LT with standard 3 spoke alloys had new front brake discs and a front tyre fitted just prior to my ownership to get it through its MOT. Looking at pictures of other LTs, the front wheel should be mounted with the curved “good” side facing to the left to match the rear wheel (which can obviously only fit one way round).

It appears the disc with the ABS ring was fitted on the wrong side of the wheel. Hence the wheel has to be mounted opposite to normal. The new tyre has been mounted on the rim so that it rotates the right way (even though the wheel has been flipped). The thin wheel spacer is to the right of the wheel and the thicker one to the left. The tyre is central to the forks.

Apart from looking slightly odd, does any of this matter? Can I wait to sort this at the next tyre change or will this be causing a problem?

Mark - it's actually very easy to remove and replace the front wheel - doesn't take long at all. You'd have to get the tyre removed and flipped to get it right, though.

Sloppy MOT? Obviously, the ABS won't work with the ring on the wrong side.

I honestly can't say if it will cause a problem - I wouldn't think it would. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Thanks Jim. The ABS works OK as the ring is on the correct side of the bike. The wheel must have been flipped during the process of replacing the discs. To rectify this I would need to remove the wheel, swap both discs over to the other side and then get the tyre remounted.

Just trying to establish if this is now just an aesthetic issue or might it cause problems. For example, the wheel bearings will now be turning the opposite way to what they have been prior to the disc swap.

At the very least you want the front TIRE spinning in the proper direction as indicated on the sidewall of the tire. If you ride with the tire going the wrong way it will destroy the tread fairly quickly. (I once purchased a K1100 with the front tire mounted the wrong way. Within a hew hundred miles the tire was wearing oddly.)

I don't THINK it is a safety issue if the wheel is on backwards as long as the rotors are backwards too. The bearings should work in either direction.

I would go to the shop that messed things up and demand that they fix it for free. I understand that it was done for a previous owner but any shop worth a lick should rectify their errors regardless.

Didn’t want this nagging at me and had a spare day so I removed the discs, cleaned everything up, repainted the disc carriers and ABS ring and refitted them on the correct side of the wheel. Tyre now remounted the other way.

I’m sure it would have been OK as it was but I can sleep well again now knowing it’s right.

That's what I'd do. Even though you'd probably be fine, it would drive me nuts knowing that it's on backwards.

Yea, me too. BTDT.
Not the rim, but I've mounted a tire backwards, once..... I'm a little more OCD about it now when I mount up tires.
