ok WE ALL KNOW that the K can make buffalo chicken wings in the 40 f / 10c weather... has anyone replaced the stock ( IMHO a really crappy one ) cooling fan with an aftermarket one with a completely separate temp sensor(stuck into the fins) and switch running parallel to the stock .
what size was installed?? and will a twin set up work ??
i plan on pulling the radiatior and doing a proper out side cleaning to clear out the road grime and dead dear parts and squrille nutz..

The Spal 6.5" replacement fan is a common mod. I've done it. Works just fine and is a bit less noisy that stock.

I had a separate sensor and with slightly lower kick in temp with the stock fan on my K1100RS for a while but got rid of it because it really didn't make that much difference. The same amount of heat gets generated and "trapped" in the body. Waste of time and effort in my opinion. (But you never know unless you try.)

I suppose you could try two fans but the same amount of excess heat gets generated so unless you reroute where the heat goes... (It's not the fan that's the issue. )

The K1100LTs used as camera bikes on Tour de France had some sort of setup with two fans since they had to run at relatively low speeds for extended periods. Obviously the heat bothered them enough for them to go to the effort to do that but they must have also rerouted where the heat goes for it to make any difference to the rider.

I replaced the thermostat with a lowers temp one, there is a write up here somewhere. 165 or 170 degree. Ran fine, but a lot cooler. Doesn't help sitting in traffic in the summer. There is a write up about a manual fan switch, I think Duck did it.

For a manual fan switch all you need the switch to do is ground the blue/yellow wire to the fan relay. (That's what the Motronic does when it wants to run the fan.)

Yes, I think the bottom line is that the engine still puts off the same amount of excess heat that it needs to dissipate SOMEWHERE.

One idea I've had (but would take too much effort) would be to redo the relay box so it's thinner and then run a rectangular tube through there with a small fan in front of it so that you could blow some extra heat that way.

Funny sidenote: I know somebody who hid a couple of extra credit cards in the relay box for emergencies. They got all melted and warped and were unusable. Shocked
