Just been out to try the reset I found on this venerable site as the ABS has never worked but if I can get it going cheaply, then I'd like to. So, I've fitted a wire to the centre pin of the diagnostic plug, earthed the other end to an engine bolt, depressed the ABS rocker switch for 30+ seconds with the ignition on and then switched off, disconnected etc and gone for a short ride up the road for a 100 yards. No change. My question is this - I am suspicious of the ABS switch and whether it actually works. To check, I connected the two probes of my multimeter (set to the audible Ohms setting) to the two soldered wires at the bottom of the switch and depressed the ABS rocker. If the switch works, I expected my multimeter to buzz indicating the switch was working. As there was no buzzing, I am assuming the switch is toast. Am I right?!?!?! And is this why the ABS can't reset?
Don't want to buy a replacement switch if my thinking is wrong!

As this switch in not used very often if at all for some, chances are pretty good that the internal grease is dirty and dried up.
You could try some spray contact cleaner and work the switch, but more than likely it will need disassembled and cleaned, re-greased.
The grease serves 2 functions, lubrication for the sliding plastic and brass, and to also help keep moisture from causing corrosion.
There is a spring loaded sleeve that slides back and forth with the contact block.
It is easy to loose the spring and sleeve so if you tackle this just beware.
It is not unheard of that the ABS will not reset with the switch/contact grounding procedure........
Some riders have covered the flashing lamps and ignored them for a short time while riding the bike as normal, and while doing this the ABS reset on it's own and they were able to remove the tape and all is well.
On another point, how good is your battery. Many times a low/weak battery can cause ABS issues at startup.
Is this a new issue?
Had the ABS previously been working?
Have you recently had new tires mounted? Not unheard of for ABS to show a fault after putting new tires on, the spacing of the front rim sensor is easy to get out of spec. _________________ Ride safe.

If your ABS system is faulted and the warning lights are flashing then it's very easy to test the switch. Press it and the ABS warning indicator will stop flashing for a few minutes. If they keep flashing after you've hit the switch then the switch has issues.

|
|
Good morning all and many thanks for the replies to my query. To answer the questions put -
The ABS has never worked since I bought the bike some time ago.
Tyres have been replaced as have both fork seals so I will check the abs sensors for clearance.
I am sure I have an ABS switch issue based on your replies - depressing and holding the switch does not change the two alternately flashing ABS warning lights on the dash in anyway.
Battery is good (horn etc all work without the engine running) - it never fails to start the bike and was replaced not long after buying the bike.
I replaced the front brake lines and front master cylinder piston assembly fairly recently and bled the entire system both front and rear with no issues.
I have the chance if a replacement abs unit if needed but want to exhaust everything else first.
Regards
