OK New to K1100 and lots of questions. I just got a 93 with a Hannigan side car and want to put the registration and insurance papers in the side boxes that I assume are like the ones on a windjammer I had so many years ago. There are locks on both sides, put the key in turn nothing. Do they open? Are they for future farkles ?
Next is the seat lock repairable or even worth repairing?
I’ve read that the 93 has a 450 watt alternator and in 94 they upgraded to a 700 watt. Is this a good idea too?
I’ll have many more questions in the days ahead but this is good for a start. _________________ If your absence doesn’t affect them, your presence never mattered.

Welcome to the forum!
After you unlock stick your fingers in the recess at the lower edge of the lid and lift to unlatch (if it's like the later models).
Not sure about the seat lock - I think it's riveted in. Guess you could swap it out. Only worth repairing if you keep anything valuable under the seat. Haven't locked the seat on mine in years...
Depends on how much electrical stuff you're connecting. _________________ Jim

There are latches to open the LT fairing boxes. Turn the key and put your fingers below the bottom edges and you'll feel a latch. The key lock either allows or prevents you from lifting up on the latch to remove the cover. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

You can read the label plate on the alternator with the side covers removed. My 93 had the higher output alternator, I think some of the early 93's had a lower, but I think mine was a 50amp?
I'm sure Duck or one of the more knowledgable will chime in. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Side "buckets" - key turned CCW is unlocked. CW is locked. As pointed out, there's a latch underneath that you need to open with your fingers.
A 93 LT will have a 32A alternator. (Unless a prior owner already upgraded to a 50A.) There's no need to upgrade unless you plan to put a decent amount of additional electrical load on the bike. (Heated gear, non-LED aux lighting, etc . . .)
Add'l note: All RSs (including 93) came from the factory with a 50A alternator. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

My 93 LT had a 50amp alternator and had never been changed. Not sure when in the production year they changed it. I believe it was July 93 build date but was registered as a 93. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled
