I bought a 94 K1100 lt last Friday.
Might have just paid someone for there headache?
My Wife actually talked me into it, saying any classic Bike I was to get I have to wrench on. Plus I had been looking to get one for a few years.
Now the handling and comfort is greatly increased over my Sabre.
Issues I new before the purchase ( that was not disclosed to me) are right front fork seals leaking. The Trans seal leaking gear lube.
Clutch Rattle (I thought they all had that with 50k miles on them).
The clutch is not slipping yet.
Well hopefully that's enough backstory for now!
Thank you all for sharing your experience and knowledge. _________________ Eric R

Welcome.
When you are ready, check the tech stickies index.
Fork seal leaks are not uncommon with bare unprotected forks. When you are ready to change them, do both, and plan on installing protective flexible "gaiters." This can pretty much prevent future leaks.
It could be possible that the "leak" could be just a piece of bug guts stuck in the seal lip, which could be cleaned out and stop the leak......an easy attempt to fix leak at virtually no cost.
If you do need to go the route of new seals, stick with the seals from BMW. Don't waste your time/money on "low cost generic" seals-- they won't work, period.
Where is the transmission fluid leaking from, front, rear? a leak at the rear could be as simple as the clutch pushrod boot being dislodged(easiest to fix at no cost) or torn.
Yea, some can have a "box of rocks" rattle to them that could be interpreted as a noisy clutch, but is not.
Your wife is not far off with her insight to older bikes, they can require some wrenching when 1st acquired to get back into shape, but once these K bikes are up to snuff, they are pretty bullet proof.
Check all oils, filters, rubber hoses(fuel, brake, vacuum, coolant), etc...... most all will need replaced at this age, though the coolant hoses seem to hold up the longest.
Anything else, just ask. _________________ Ride safe.

The gear lube is leaking from the week hole not bad enough to leave a puddle on the floor, but it's burning on the exhaust.
Is this a topic for the tech forum? _________________ Eric R

Yep, in the tech forum would be perfect. Also you should add your bike info to your signature area, that way you won't be asked-or have to enter it, when you have questions.....
Oil from the weep hole is way more common(like almost every K-bike) to be motor oil from the "clutch nut o-ring" than anything else. Not saying it can't be trans lube though.
The o-ring will dryout, crack and break purely with age.
Either way if it is the o-ring or a transmission input shaft seal, you do have to pull the transmission to accomplish the mission. One advantage is that when you do remove the transmission, it will allow you to complete a few more maintenance lubrication tasks that would be inevitable. _________________ Ride safe.

If it's gear oil, not motor oil, coming out of the weep hole then it's probably the seal on the clutch pushrod at the rear of the transmission.
Part 12 in this diagram:

This can be replaced without removing the transmission. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

That would be awsome, I will follow the link and also refer to the climer manual that came with the bike.
Thanks for your input. _________________ Eric R

Welcome, Eric.
Even if you see a drip at the weep hole, but you're smelling it burn, I would definitely recommend that you check the pushrod boot Scott mentioned.
The boot or "Cup" is BMW part 23131338731 or #6 below: (Sorry about funky link...it was jacking up my reply somehow with URL tags as originally posted.)
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0536-USA---89V2-BMW-K%201100%20LT%20(0526,%200536)&diagId=21_0074
When I bought mine there was a small drip at the hole as you're seeing, but it turned out the burning gear oil smell was due to a leak coming from that boot. When leaking, it happens to land directly on the collector box area of the exhaust below, then burns off when you ride off all fragrant like.
It can leak due to age/damage, being installed incorrectly or simply having the clutch free-play poorly adjusted. There was even a TSB about the last cause back in '89 for the K100:
http://www.hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/download/K100-service-bulletins-and%20special-tools/21%20006%2089%20%282355%29.pdf
It's an easy part to check and replace if needed, as you'll likely be doing with a bunch of rubber bits.
Good luck with the LT. There's a wealth of info here to take care of it. _________________ Niemand
