I know that there is a forum for BMW twins but I have not been able to log on so I will now ask the more knowledgeable of BMW owners.
I'm starting to restore a 1985 R80RT (mono) I intend to use a R100RT oil cooler and a DEEP DISH oil pan. Here's the question...... I have a very strong magnet. It measures 2x1x3/8. I would like to place this magnet in the oil pan. "oil pan is new" Would you Crazy Glue it, OR what......

Thanks again.

Why not just install a magnetic drain plug?

I have a magnetic plug The magnet is the size of a pea. I'm moving down to Palm Harbor, Fla in Jan. so I would like LOT'S of oil and clean at that.
I have a large magnet on the outside of my Crown Vic. Mod p71 interceptor.
It feels like a good idea, But then again It could be my German engineering.

I don't think there would be a problem with a magnet in the sump pan. The pick-up for the oil pump has a strong gauze screen so would not block the oil intake. As you will know there are cast alloy baffles in the sump pan which can be used to fix/glue the magnet out of the way of the pick up.

If I was doing something like that, I would use one of the two part Epoxy Resin adhesives. Not one of the 'quick cure' types, but the original where it has to be left for 24 hours- they are stronger. Additionally I would drill through the baffle in 2-3 places, so that some of the resin could be forced through to give a better key.

On the other hand, I know that many flat twin BMW's have exceeded over 150,000 miles and are still running on the original crank bearings. Used properly and serviced regularly, I feel you are at more risk of seal failure than damage wear to bearings or cylinder bores. The stock oil filters are actually very efficient.

As it turned out I had breakfast with the Tampa Bay Riders, Tampa ,Fla.
I asked the parts guru Joe The same question. Joe said what he did was to
place a magnet on the outside of the pan, Next to the drain plug. So when he pulls the magnet ALL the crap goes out, Does not build up be the internal magnet placement.

Good point, it would work as well, and let you drain all of the metal out, but would screw up any oil samples you take, if you are into oil analysis.

(( $0.02 ))

For what its worth.... on my R100/7 the oil sump drain plug is steel. You are right that the magnet in the plug is "pea size",, so I simply put a appx 5/8 dia x .050" thk Neobyum Super Magnet on the outside surface of the hex. I thought it would soon fall off or be batted away by road debris... however it remains in place and I hope improves the function of the of the drain plug to attract minute metal particles. If I remember, because of polarity, one side of the Super Magnet was/is more decidedly secure to the hex than was the opposite side... I dont know how much better if any it improves the function since both my hand and the plug are awash with oil when I remove the plug !

I replaced the magnet in my vintage Yamaha Virago where the starter output assembly meets the flywheel, with a far far stronger Nyobyum one... and the amount of clinging particulate I find at "tear down" is astounding. I also did the "clinging magnet" trick to the drain plug here..and it too collects particulate. ..

So theres my $0.02.....

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Bobcamp....

You said you were looking to find a "forum" for BMW twins.... did you mean "boxers" or "thumpers" " ??

If you meant classic BMW aircooled boxer engines... then go to :
( www.airheads.org ) and become a member. There is more info on that site than you can ever digest.

If you meant Dual Sport BMWs with the Rotek engines , one cyl and 2 cyl...
then go to www.F650.com and register.

I dont know where the Oilhead and Hexhead BMW boxer people go. If youve got one of those, then youre on your own !

Good luck and .... Ride safe....// Ernie in NH
