So a lady lawyer friend of mine recently got divorced, He got the Ducati 996 in the divorce, she got the BMW. She's interested in selling and I'm thinking about an upgrade.
2001 BMW R 1100 SA, special edition, Carbon fiber all over, Olin suspension, 2 brothers exhaust under 20k miles. Going to see and ride it next weekend, from what I can find it's S but the special edition gives it a few tweaks, and delete the center stand.
Anyone have any idea what weaknesses it would have? A fair price?
And yes I will check and lube the drive shaft splines... _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Chuck,
Remember what Rydor's bike looks like? That is an R1100S. I had one, although it was the Boxer Cup edition.
You might want to get in touch with Audi- he also has a Boxer Cup.
Not in the same ballpark as an LT, the riding position is more aggressive than my K-RS.
From cycle-ergo.com. (using 6'-0 as a rider height)
Forward lean- K-LT 0 degrees K-RS 21 degrees R-S 29 degrees
Just a FYI
Nice bike though. Weaknesses? The engine is tough on starters and has pretty narrow powerband compared to the K bike. I don't believe that the '01 bikes had the "whizzy" brakes (BMW's try at power brakes ) so that is a plus. The R-S has the telelever front suspension which doesn't dive on hard braking.
Overall, a very different feel compared to a K11.
As far as price? All over the place. The IBMWR website has one advertised at $5000 but I have seen them for more.
Good luck with your test ride! Let us know how it turns out.

NADA has them at ~ $3,500 - $4,500. Heavily farkled, it might come in at $5,000.
Probably need to add bar backs... _________________ Jim

Jim & Chuck- the bars are clip-ons. They can be positioned below or above the top triple clamp. Several companies sell clip-on riser "towers" but bar backs? I haven't seen any. _________________ John & Cathy

Did some digging:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_R1100S
Sounds like the Boxster Cup bikes were 2003 to 2005. She said her 2001 is a "Special Edition" and she added an aftermarket exhaust. It'll be next Sunday before I can go ride it, will let you know what I think. I think the price is going to be relatively cheap considering. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Went to see i, the rain slicked roads kept me from riding. I's just like the picture on the wikipedia page, all black and carbon fiber, and unlike Sean's no lower fairing. One owner, ridden by a lady lawyer friend.....
It's got 28k miles on it, life has gotten in her way and the first number she threw out was $4000 and then said for you less. She has the battery tender, and the side suitcases, not top case. It has a performance chip in it, and a two brothers exhaust that is significantly louder than I would like but sounds really good. It also has a slightly fatter rear tire. Only flaw I found was one rear turn signal mount broker from garage damage.
She admitted she got it to 140, and got stopped at 120 and talked her way out of the ticket. She bought it in FL and moved to GA years ago, she takes it to the BMW shop in Greenville for maintenance. Seems in great shape, dusty, and she's a motivated seller. Will let you know after I ride it. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

The 1100s is a great bike.. But it is a sport bike, if you like that kind of thing..
$4000k is a good deal if it's all there.. With an after market pipe.. The 5.5 rear wheel is an upgrade too.
If you can get it for less it would be worth just to clean up and flip...
Good luck.. |
