I am on my third K1100 LT. just purchased another one this year, after one wore out, and the other had an electrical fire after a lot of gravel road time.
It only has 31,000 miles on it, and I have been riding it, and trying to work through stupid stuff....I thought it was under powered, so I ran some good fuel injector cleaner through it. Still seemed sluggish.
This weekend I was out by myself and decided to open it up. at 135 mph in 4th gear....and a little more room to run......the suspension issue that I am trying to ID raised it's ugly head, and I backed off.
NEITHER of my other bikes was that fast. I am guessing there is some different gearing under this thing? I have a lot of paperwork that came with it...but haven't had a chance to go through it. Raining the last couple days....maybe I can look, but I was thinking someone here might have heard of a swap out?
Thanks
Ken

Here is what I found in a book they included with the bike. Looks like he printed part of an email......
Says that stock gears are 31/11 gears
A set of 33/13 gears out of a R1200C will fit into the K11 housing. dropping 500rpm from cruising speed
Alternately 34/13 gears from a k1200LT can be used for dropping 300rpm
Gary Bennett if you're still out there, sounds like you coached the guy I bought it from.
Sounds like the rear end came out of an R1200C? _________________ Ken in Denver |

Yes, Anton Largiader in Charlottesville swapped out a K11 gearset for a customer. It's been awhile since he told me about it - I think he swapped an original gearset back in for the original owner - or maybe the next owner. _________________ Jim

This bike came with all kinds of farkle.
Got the electronic cruise control repaired today. speed sensor had a wire come unplugged.
Moved the Ohlin to the new bike....now the front forks leak...looking at the old forks that I believe had Ohlin springs in them...to see if they leak.....that should fix the well oiled brake pads....so I can replace those...
I swear all they did with this bike was work on it...and it has more problems than any I have ever owned. Usually I just clean things up replace worn out parts....and start riding. Hopefully after the suspension repair....the high speed wobble will be gone...and we can find out what that top speed really is? _________________ Ken in Denver |
