More is relative. A valve adjustment, new plugs, and synchronizing the throttle bodies will make a lot of the vibration go away.

I say the "smoothness" at idle and low speeds get much better after the throttle balance.

Actually, I don't really know if mine vibrates more or less than the average K1100...
I've never ridden another and I've only had the brick for 3 months or so... But it sure vibrates more than my 1979 Honda CBX1000Z (the CBX is 6 cyl though).

By the way, is that your real fuel consumption? That's US gallons right? That equates to 5.4L for every 100km in my brain... That sounds pretty good... I've read a lot about this (fuel is expensive in Europe, more than double price!!!!!), and there's people saying they can't ride 200 miles with one tank???

Yep, I get 39 around town, about 48 cruising, and 42 when I ride it hard.

I fill up every 130 miles because I don't like to hear the fuel pump moan.

Mine would kind of stumble and rattle at idle. Synchronizing the TB took it all away.

Hi Zalle,

What do you ride and where are you?

Last year I rode my K100RS4V from NYC to California in less than 2 days.

Vibrations? Nothing to get me off the bike- we aren't iriding Mercedes. What are you expecting?

These bikes buzz a bit - once you get past 4,500 rpms, should smooth out. Try what John said - once these bikes are set up right, they're pretty smooth.

I've run out of gas twice with the K11LT - both times was high tailing it across the country - pulling a trailer. Ran out once at 239 miles, the second time at 240. I believe the tank is rated at 5.2 gallons - might get a little more in without a flapper.

I have removed the flapper - but if you're in Europe, I don't think you have that anyway - I think it was a California thing.

Hi guys, thanks for your input. I'm in the south of Europe. Portugal.

Mine is very smooth at idle. No rattles. I notice the vibration when revving, but I haven't cruised yet, so I'm not sure. I don't know mpg yet and I was a bit scared, but if it's within 40-50 mpg US then that's fine.

About my ride, it's a 1992 K11LT. Clean bike with 40k miles on the clock. All original manuals, stamped service history, 2 original keys and original bmw keyholder.

Front brakes are rattling and right heated grip not working. Apart from that, all is good. I stripped it all down when I bought it, cleaned, washed, polished, sprayed, replaced some rubbers and lights, removed stereo and speakers, and put all the fairings back together real tight with sticky foam between plastics to reduce noise.

Maybe I should lube the splines soon...

I have a project in another forum, I can clone it here if you want.

With fairings:

Here she is without fairings:

(I can't get this one to work, you'll have to click on it if you want to see it...)

Nice looking bike there....just like my '95
Re a couple of comments, front brake rattle-- the front rotors are a "floating" type rotor, meaning they are not mounted solid. They will make some noise at different times. That said, you have to look at the little round mounting 'bobbins' and inspect for excess wear as the stock ones are made of aluminum.(designed to be a wear item like the pads). Excess wear can cause excess noise.

I noticed the wear/color pattern on that front left rotor, looks like the pad is not seating/flat/even on that rotor.

Hi Scott,

I already know about the bobbins issue. I'm doing this "fix", which I'm not sure will last, but I guess that if there is noise, there is slack, so I thought about changing the washers for some of those slightly bent ones, that act like a spring.

I took a few bobbins out (4 or 5) of one of the disks, bent the washers slightly, and put them back. Noise is gone. I'm thinking about removing both disks and do that to all washers, if I can't find those springy ones in the same size.

Does your 95 version have those paddings on the side of the tank? Is this a later model improvement?

I will check the pad/rotor. Thanks.

Yes, actually both of mine have those "knee pads" on the side of the fuel tank.

WHOA!

Those knee pads are now outrageously expensive - for a piece of sticky backed foam...

Knee padding (left) 16 11 1 455 331 $72.82
Knee padding (right) 16 11 1 455 332 $84.61

Don't know if they came from the factory with them - probably an add on.

Only available in black now - the colors are all gone... Crying or Very sad

When a new primer coated gas tank is over $1500, nothing else seems too crazy.

I remember Dominic telling us at the first or second HMSP there were only 8 tanks left on the shelf in Berlin - I think they were $1200.00 ten years ago.
