The front left caliper is a bit sticky, not wanting to release its grip right away. Since there are no leaks from the calipers, can one open them up to clean and use the same seals?

I wouldn't consider re using anything that's 23 years old...
New brake fluid? Brake lines replaced? _________________ Jim

You may find it useful if you remove the offending calliper but leave the brake line still attached. Remove pads.
Place a piece of wood (or metal) between the pistons thick enough to mimic the disc and worn out pads and gently pump them out but not so far as to pop the pistons out of the cylinders. Now detach the calliper from the blake line
Release the bleed screw and attach a piece of tube to the end. Clean the edges of the pistons and dust seals with brake cleaner and something like an old toothbrush rinse the crud off with brake cleaner again, dry off and coat them with brake fluid and press the pistons back into the cylinders.
Now refit the calliper and pads. Repeat for the other side. Bleed the brakes as normal. There is more than a chance that all that is causing the brake to be a bit sticky is simply a bit of dirt.
It is well reported that it is not good practise to split the 4 piston callipers as fitted to K1100 bikes because of the difficulty of getting a perfect seal
after they are split apart. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

It could just be crap in a brake line. Give the whole system a good flush with new fluid. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks for the replies. The front and back brakes were just flushed with new fluid about 400 miles ago. Have some new front disc pads due in next week. Will try Grunter's advice then follow with a good flush again. _________________

If those are the original brake lines, you might want to think about replacing them. _________________ Jim

I replaced the front brake lines on my KLT a couple of months ago after there was a loss of pressure. The right hand one was so bad that there was no discernible tube for the fluid to pass, the pipe was near to bursting!
Even before the pipes were changed there was no sticking where the callipers were concerned. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I had an 86 K100 with a very sticky caliper. When I redid the piping the issue went away.
Lots of stuff that can go wrong with hydraulics. Hit and miss troubleshooting to solve the issue is what resolves things in my experience. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

At least one rider on the forum has had the brake line turn into a one way valve as the brake line deteriorated inside. It would allow fluid to move toward the caliper, but not back to the master cylinder - causing the caliper to hang up.
At 23 years of age, most of the rubber bits on a bike will be deteriorating - including the brake lines. _________________ Jim

Let us hope that it is only the brake lines are the real problem. I have just checked the original parts list and new seals and dust covers are listed as being supplied to BMW Dealers only! Non genuine parts may be available but I would not like to use them
I have also checked several independant BMW parts suppliers and they do not list them. Parts are available for the rear twin piston calliper but not the front. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

You can get Breembo caliper kits and Magura master cylinder kits from Motobins. I just got some back in June.
Apparently the "sales restriction" must only apply to U.S. sales.
Some dealers may sell the parts, but only if they do the install...... _________________ Ride safe.
