Hi Guys, just wanted to introduce myself. I just bought a 94 krs, mystic red with only 6200 miles on it. Great deal and it was so beautiful I couldn't resist.
A friend had purchased it new in 94 and sold it to a neighbor about 4 years ago and that guy only rode it once around the area. It has not a mark on it just a little dusty.
Of course we all know that a unused bike sometimes it not a good thing in the mechanical dept. but got my fingers crossed. It still has original tires on it so that is job one and of course all fluids changed. What else can you think of such as spline lube maybe plugs etc.? I did have a 85 rs many decades ago and many bikes in between so not new to this game. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks Arch.

Welcome,
I'd suggest changing all the fluids, check the battery(probably due for a new one).
Lube the clutch cable pivot points:
lower pivot arm at the rear of the transmission above the exhaust catalytic converter.
the brass barrel in the clutch lever that the cable sets into needs lube. Broken cables can result from this not being lubricated.
Be careful NOT to get lubricant down the cable jacket(at least don't put it in there on purpose) as some lubricants can cause the inner jacket to swell and bind the cable.

Remember the coolant, mix with distilled water, not tap water. Does not have to be BMW branded coolant, so long as it is compatible with aluminum engine components(most all are anymore today).

When changing the tires, be sure to double check the abs gap on the front before final tightening of the axle pinch bolts.

As far as the clutch goes, I'd ride it for a bit 1st. If you start to experience hard transmission downshifts, then that is your 1st sign that you are now due for a clutch spline lube. Ultimately it's your call on that. Chances are that no p.o. has had it done based on your described history.

Arch.....WELCOME!

Did you get a look inside the fuel tank? Might want to at least change the gas filter (it is inside the tank, as you may remember)

But all the fluids should be changed on a regular basis, especially brake fluid and engine oil. Are the fork seals still doing their job?

Others will be along with further info.

Any pictures of your KRS?

John

When you get the new tires installed I would replace the OLD rubber valve stems with new metal ones.

http://www.chaparral-racing.com/product/chrome-tubeless-valve-stem/315-1402.aspx

I would also replace the internal and external fuel lines.

Take the belly pan off, jack up the front end and twist the steering from side to side to make sure the steering head bearing grease has not hardened.

Zerk some fresh grease into the side and center stands.

Thanks for the replies, I haven't got it home yet, it's about 40 miles away and would like to ride it home and because I'm on the downhill slide of life Laughing not much interested in wrangling this 600 pound top heavy beauty on and off my truck but don't know if thats a good idea. My friend said it was running perfectly when the owner rode it down to his house last year. The bike has a nice set of heli bars on it and the flashing stop light kit on it plus a removable windshield held on by the velcro dots. All good suggestions that I will follow when I start the rehab. Thanks Arch.

I wouldn't ride it 100 ft. on 22 year old original tires.
There's no way I'd try to wrestle one of these beasts into a pickup either.

Do you know anyone with a trailer you could borrow?

If the sidwalls aren't cracked I'd ride old tires 40 miles. Probably wouldn't get near the freeway or push it on turns though.

I've seen a guy put a K1100LT in the back of his truck. He was a VERY experienced mechanic though. Don't think I could ever do the same.

Trailer or truck, make sure you air up the tires first to at least 36 psi or so. It will roll MUCH easier.

Using 10' long 40" wide folding ramps like these:

I ride my RS up into the bed of my 3/4 ton pickup. Never had a problem.

Arch - it's very likely that most of the rubber bits - or at least a lot of them - have deteriorated. You'll want to look at all those closely.

Spiegler should have a brake line kit for that bike.

Like your user name - we most likely work for the same employer.

If you start having buyers remorse give me a shout - I have owned several K-bikes if the past - have one now with 3 wheels on it.

Put my '93 LT in the back of my S10 pickup with a skinny ramp off of a car carrier. Scared the hell out of me, will not be trying that again.

Arch, you better get busy, Hungry Mother is in 60 days as Jim pointed out. There is a running thread in the meetings section.

Plus, if there is something not right with your bike, that gathering will either fix it or burn it to the ground.

Welcome to the funny farm...

Just a little update on my bike, I went ahead and picked it up with my truck and a couple of friends mainly because I would have had to figure out putting a new batt in before riding it and it was just easier to get it home and take my time. I got the batt in and even with old fuel it started immediately, idled nicely and sounded good. I let it idle until almost the red mark on temp gage and fan kicked on, brought the temp down and turned off so all good so far.
The next day I took it for a sedate ride considering the original tires for about 20 miles until everything was good and warm and changed engine, tranny and rear drive oil. I didn't change the filter yet because I put some detergent cleaner with the oil and want to ride it about 300 miles and then change oil and filter just in case there was any sludge in it.
I changed the coolant the next day and ran some system cleaner through and then put in a 40-60 mix. The bike really ran beautifully and handled well even with old tires so very impressed with it. My new tires came in yesterday, battle-ax t30's so get them on thur. Love this bike! Regards Arch.
