After Hungry Mother last year, and "someone" who was NOT riding a K bike had a clutch cable break I did a little homework on cables and such. I bought a spare new clutch cable which I plan to instal this spring, and was thinking to carry the old one as a spare when I ran across a cable repair kit on eBay. Price was about $10. Compared to carrying a whole cable this fits in a round metal can about the size of a Skoal can. Includes a small and large cable, and several different cable ends, In theory, with just a small screwdriver you could replace about any cable on any bike. Much easier to carry than a cable, and, even if a Harley guy breaks down, you COULD help them out. The part number I bought was 84-17901 Cable Repair Kit. Maybe if everyone had one, no one would need it.

I always keep a spare clutch cable with the K - faster and cheaper than a tow.

Some guys install the spare OEM cable right along side the cable that's in use - that way when the cable fails you connect the spare that's already in place, and pull the broken one out whenever.

I carry both cables and am going to do the "parallel cable" setup that Jim mentioned. I have a couple IBA rides this year and don't know the age of the existing cables. Better safe than sorry- especially in the middle of nowhere at 3am.

Nice find Chuck. Might get one for my Daytona.

Barrel lubrication is more important that what I would have ever imagined..... It bit me this last year with the '97. After the 2nd clutch cable in less than a year, I finally found the root cause-- the barrel had worn the retaining mount hole in the lever handle just enough to cause it to bind and flex the cable, and ultimately breaking it again... Doh. Rolling Eyes

So after another new cable, new barrel and clutch lever, all is good. Oh and lubrication........
