Been doing winter maintenance!.
I took off the swing arm for the spline lube and then removed the ABS unit, the battery and the alternator to check its drive rubbers. Also changed the fork oil. All directly or getting close to the ABS items both ends and middle. All back in place and done a couple of good test runs, but the ABS will not reset; got both lights on alternately. I did the test point earthing and holding down the switch procedure - many times; I got the LED lamp check done - said it was the front sensor, so I shorted out the female contacts of the connector under the tank - no luck. So maybe the sensor has gone duff; but this seems odd as it has not been disturbed; the rear one was off attached to the brake caliper but not damaged; checked it's cable connector near the tank and ok.
Sooo... any suggestions, tests, reset methods, sensor checking methods, what have you would be welcomed.
The abs has been apart in a big way to do the clutch, numerous spline lubes, fork maintenance etc and always come back on.
Hoping someone can assist with solving the riddle!
In hope, Tony.

I had a similar situation with my former '93 K-RS. I must have done the usual reset 20+ times with no change.

I temporarily "fixed" this by a piece of black tape over the flashing lights.

Several weeks later and after a fair bit of riding I happened to look at the gauges at an odd angle and noticed that the lights were no longer on.

The bike had fixed itself.

These BMW ABS systems must have some black magic in them somewhere.

I know it doesn't help you right now, but that was my experience.

Maybe you need an exorcist.

If the code was for the front sensor, did you check the gap for the front sensor?

If you pulled anything on the front end then make sure the front sensor wire is routed properly. I once installed my front end so the sensor wire was rubbing against the tire. It rubbed though the wire's insulation and caused an ABS II front sensor fault. Solution was to replace the front sensor with one with a good wire. Then the system reset itself the next time it initialized.

What do you think shorting the sensor wires will accomplish? The ABS brain initialization testing looks for a pulse from the front end once the bike starts rolling.

Same happened to me after front end work. Even taking off and putting back on the front wheel can mean that the front abs sensor may need reshimming/regapping.

Alternatively loosen he pinch bolts and tap the leg (the forks, not your own) to adjust the gap.

Hi all;
Thanks for the feedback; further info requested;
it's a 1996 bike, 75000mls, ABS II; it has a multi plug awkward to refit but I refitted it and then took it off to see no pins bent etc; all ok; refitted it so the clip clicked into place.
Black tape! got plenty of it; time may tell; I went to an independent who tested it with the old led lamp set up as the "new" bike kit didn't function on this ABS.
There is no rubbing cable, the front wheel or calipers were not removed, no obvious damage from before or after the maintenance work. The front sensor gap was checked by me and the mechanic and it is correct 0.5 - 0.55mm. The rear one is small but it is the same as it has been the last 75000miles and no resetting prob before; I even tried moving the caliper on which the sensor is mounted out to make the 0.6 -.65 gap but this did not get a reset so I have left it as it has always been; and to move the rear or front sensors is no simple matter or them being on a bendy bit of metal - definitely not so they are solidly fixed.
The shorting out of the front sensor cable to the control unit was suggested by one of our US contributors who said it had worked for him.

So, question; has anyone heard of a sensor failing; has anyone heard of the ABS unit itself failing?? Finally any other suggestions?
Thanks for your assistance so far and any more will be most gratefully received.
Tony.

Yes, it is possible that the ABS II brain will fail. Although it is very unlikely that is the root cause of your issue.

Only other thing I can think of is a low battery - they are very sensitive to battery voltage. Is is a new/fully charged battery?

One suggestion, from this forum I think is to ride the bike, then when rolling, turn off the ignition and bump/rolling restart the bike. The abs will self check, without the draw from the starter motor.

Let us know how you get on - good luck.

Gidday,

Same thing happened to me with ABS11 fitted on a 1993 K1100, actually that was why the PO sold me the bike cheap as it had a few "electrical" issues with the brakes.. Even the bike shop gave up

Tried everything that was mentioned and suggested, so I brought a secondhand ABS11 unit cheap off ebay for $150.00, installed it myself and it has worked great ever since..
Look around for one to have has a spare anyway as they are not getting any cheaper.. Best of Luck

I just had my ABS II rebuilt as I had tried everything. As it turns out, there is no way I could have repaired it myself. There were two specific faults on the controller board, one being a broken connection to ground requireing a circuit board fix. So there was a definite "brain" failure. When that was fixed, the tech saw a remaining a plunger failure code which I couldn't detect since only the last failure code (controller) was reported. So for the same rebuild price, they dug into my ABS pump and repaired it as well. Bottom line I had both a brain and mechanical failure.

The 5 year warranty on the rebuild provides a level of peace of mind.

As others have recommended, using a simple LED light, reading your codes first will be an important step. Count your blessings if it is a sensor failure. Easy and cheap fix.

But... if it is an actual ABS controller and/or pump failure, that is a different ball field. I seriously pondered eliminating ABS entirely and shedding the weight along with it. I've ridden a bunch of miles on non-ABS bikes. (I also rode a bicycle as a kid with no helmet - counted as child abuse in today's world ) But erred on the side of keeping the bike with all working components. Each as a right to decide what is best for them.

BTW, Attempting to avoid the $350 rebuild cost ... I bought a used ABS2 for an RS off of flea bay... was supposedly "perfect" with a video of the running bike before disassembly. It sure wasn't. Rearview mirror vision is always 20-20... either that or I'm a slow learner!

If it's an ABS 1 bike, my three wire plug is on the left side of the bike behind the battery cover. Try the procedure Duck sent you, of if all else fails let me know, I have a GS-911 I loan out.

A ABS fault caused by low voltage should reset itself when things is back to normal.
