For my milestone birthday a few weeks ago, my wife surprised me and said I should look into a new bike...more specifically a 2015 K1600GT (she was thinking the GTL but I said "Hell no!")

I love my Palmetto green 95 KRS but would really appreciate any and all feedback from this group about the pros and cons of the K1600. May end up keeping the KRS in spite of a newer bike.

Again, any and all feedback about this choice is appreciated.

I'm a money guy full time, and a bike guy. I know the new bikes are really cool, but the depreciation hit hurts. I'd look for a 3 to 5 year old bike sitting in someone's garage that their wife is bugging them to get rid of it. And make a cash low ball offer.

A once in a life time deal comes along every six months.

$$$ stuff aside-

Summer of 2014 wife and I spent a few days riding with our daughter and future S-I-L out on the California coast where they live. I rented a 1600GT from California Motorcycle Adventures in Mountain View, near San Jose. (very good experience)

What a bike! Smooth, power up the kazoo and lots of fun. Good fuel mileage and range- we rode 5-10 mph over once outside of towns and got 45-50 mpg.
Everything worked as if the bike was new and it had over 44,000 miles on it.

But to throw a wrench into your plans, the last two trips out there I also rented the new water cooled boxer R1200RT. Just as comfortable and another fun bike to ride. The new water cooled 1200 boxer engine is WAY different from the previous air/oil cooled. Smooth and LOTS of low end grunt.
I would really like to ride the new R1200RS (which would be like the R bike version of the GT vs the GTL)

If you get the opportunity you should try the 1600GT and the R1200RS before making a choice. You might be surprised.

Any further questions? Ask.

Good luck. John

The money hit isn't so bad . . . if you never sell it. But I do agree, I have never bought a new bike, especially a BMW, I let others ride, farkle and fix the bugs then I pick them up cheap 5 or 6 years later.

Maybe more so in the Harley world than BMWs, but I've had a dozen clients pull 30k out of investments to buy a brand new black mega loud Harley, and ride it one summer, then three years later they ask me if I know anyone wanting to buy it for $12k cash because the wife is tired of parking outside. The other school buys a bike at 65, rides the crap out of it for a year, then have a health issue and can't anymore. So, 3 years later it's sat for two years and again the wife wants it gone.

As you mention, after three years any flaws are known, and either BMW or aftermarket has parts or a fix available.

When I buy cars I look for 4 years old, with lowest miles and service history. Bikes are a little different but the economics should be close.

Then there is THIS sick bunch that rides a 20+ year old K bikes with our cassette tape players, bad seats, and impossible to find radial tires for bikes. Yeah, love you guys....

Talk about letting someone ELSE get hit with the depreciation.....the K11OG folks are the champs at that. Laughing

Think that many, if not most, of us here bought a great bike at some pretty dirt cheap prices. Of course having to source parts on ebay and CL just adds to the fun. Rolling Eyes

So lets say you are going to buy a 30k bike, instead find a 10k bike and put 20k in an balanced mutual fund.

Ride the bike 10 years and it's worth 2-3K, and the fund is worth 40k.

Thats one reason I ride a K1100. That and the witty banter of all of these colorful characters.

Witty but constructive banter...agree!

Thank you all so much for the candid, and informative responses (I would have expected nothing less from this group Wink ).

I think I will do what I originally wanted to do after having owned several K-bikes over the years - which is to look at a bike 4-5-6 years old in VGC and ride the hell out of it as suggested by most of you. Perhaps an 09-10 K13 for half the cost of the K16 is the right ticket! My wife simply liked the looks of my buddy's K16GTL.

Any watch outs for the K1300GT's???

Apparently, my location was disabled somehow. Anyhoo, it is displaying again....Alpharetta, GA. About an hour north of Atlanta.
