You might want to complete your signature so we know the year/model of your K bike.
The 911 may be able to diagnose it. Ask Chuck (N41EF) if his 911 will do it.
BTW, I will move this to Tech _________________ John & Cathy

Yes, the 911 will read the version and date of the ECU ROM chip. There is a seller on eBay, or several, who sell ROM chips where you can open your ECU and swap in a "hotter" or "better" chip. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Are these hot chips hard to install? Do they really work? One vendor claims "+20hp", which is hard to swallow but anything that helps fuel mileage is worth a try to me. |

There have been discussions regarding chips in the past years.
General consensus was that they do not work as advertised.

My thoughts, if a simple software change could actually give you 20 real HP change, don't you think BMW would of done it? I have a pretty good knowledge of programming and engines, and I'm sure you could tweak things and get a little gain in power or milage. That is either, not and. Usualy programmers lean things out at idle and low speeds and give you more fuel at higher RPMs to generate more power at higher RM and at WOT.
I think if you have a tank of premium, new spark plugs, a clean air filter, and balanced throttle bodies, you are prob getting 95% of whatever HP the engine is capable of. The air intake has a bend but is pretty efficient, the exhaust doesn't wind around anything, and the fuel injection runs closed loop so adjusts to actual running conditions.
If I thought it would be a big change, I would of done it a year ago. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

I have tried both Harman & BBR chips in a 1990 16v K100RS(they will not afaik work in motronic 2.2).Both chips gave a perceived/felt power increase, this may be because at the time Germany was adhering to the voluntary 100bhp limit so mapping may have been used to limit output. At the time some claimed extra 12-14 bhp when dynoed:something my seat of pants would not argue with.Anyway my take,BBR chip:a hooligan with instant throttle response, poor lowdown revs control and poor fuel economy.Harman chip:same economy as standard + better "driveability" i.e. flat spot at 4-5k no longer there and more top end + strangely less engine vibration. _________________ Only older never wiser. |

Was there a difference in engine HP between the US and ROW market? _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

A '97 should be 2.2
Bmw changed from 2.1 to 2.2 in and around the '93-'94 time frame. _________________ Ride safe.

I've tried both Harmann and Staintune chips on K100RS4Vs. No noticeable difference.
I've also tried a K1100 chip from England on my K1100s that I got from a Grinell Scorpion owner. It turned the fan on when I turned the ignition on so I suspect it's for a non-cat bike. (All US K1100s have cats and a cat Motronic.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)
