|
|
Gidday Folks,
Yesterday I removed the radiator and electric fan and replaced the fan with a good used one, which came with a bonus spare radiator (ebay $52.00 for both) after the old one had seized, well tightened and would not spin to freely.
Anyways I put it all back together which is a straight forward job as a few weeks before I had it all out and installed all new coolant hoses but forgot to check the fan, silly me.
I went to start the bike and it would only turn over and not start the engine, this being odd and has never happened before in the 3 years I have own it, so off came the tank again and I search the wiring in case I had bumped something during the fan install.
Again I went to start and the same happened, no firing of the engine and this time I noticed that the fuel pump did not do its normal buzzing prior to starting.
The wiring loom under the tank seems a little touchy and once I moved it a little the fuel gauge left from left to right and the fuel pump fired up and the motor started.
This looms seems to be failing or on its way out, what are they called or listed under so I can buy a new one? or could it be something else and is this a common thing?
Any help would be great. _________________ Cheers Grant

Grant,
clean the connectors and make sure they are plugged in tightly. All those wires end up in a rather large harness (I think) which is not cheap. If the problem is at the connectors, those can be changed. If the problem is in one of the wires, cut the bad section out and splice in a new section.
For some reason, the connectors on our bikes don't seem to hold up well. Use contact cleaner/enhancer like Corrosion-X or deoxit. _________________ Jim

It could also be possible that your recent venture into the bike bowls exposed a problem sooner than later.
I have read about wires breaking for the ignition switch, where it comes up around the headstock and connects at the switch. Just simply caused by age and flexing from turning the bars over the years.
Not saying that the wiring is your issue, I also agree with Jim, clean and check any and all electrical connections you can get at, especially the motronic plug. I've been bit by that one in the past. _________________ Ride safe.

Gidday Scott,
Yep understood mate, surprising the amount of wires under the tank area and they are small fine wires at that which would break easily..
I just restored my 1978 R100rs and installed a complete new wiring loom right through the bike, nice fat chunky wires compared to these K bikes..
Time to inspect a few and have a good look under the tank I think!!
Thanks for you input

Check and clean the wiring connector for the tank, behind the right-side cover. It is responsible for both the fuel pump and the guage. CRC makes a great electrical connection cleaner available at Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. if you can't find the ones Jim mentioned.
This is a common problem easily remedied _________________ Ted

+1 on Ted's response.
That 4 pin connector becomes loose and can cause an intermittent failure.
You may need to squeeze the pins to improve the contact, or better still replace with a modern 4 pin waterproof connetcor.

Mike is right on, lots of folks use trailer connectors. If you are at all handy with shrink wrap and a soldering iron (or like me, willing to buy a some scrap wire and practice with YouTube videos) you can have a totally stock-looking result. _________________ Ted
