Looks like I picked the wrong year to move! Haven't checked in here in many months, busy settling in after my move to Texas. Sure am missing my South Carolina hills. Looks like this years HM will be one for the books. I guess now I have a reason to try an Iron Butt ride. Unfortunately my vacation ends April 30th. Hope you folks have great weather. I know you'll have fun! _________________ 1995 K1100 LT

So a couple of months to go, and a HM virgn so I have a few questions...
Do most people ride or trailer? I'm thinking about trailering because I'm going to turn it into a business trip and see a few clients on the way up and back, easier to carry enough clothes.
Is there a community tool set or does everyone bring things of their own?
Do we do a ride to dinner most nights, or do people cook. I'm thinking about bringing a batch of venison chili, and maybe a smoked boston butt or smoked turkey breasts, I like to grill and keep my BGE going several times a week.
I have a stockpile or paper goods, plates, forks napkins and cups. Plan on bringing all of that stuff too. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Trailers are for pussy cats....
Venison is for real men....
Most will ride up..but its a free world and we might give you crap for being a trailer rider...but. It will be harder to do while were eating some good venison stew!!
Btw...is n41ef a tail #? |

I'm an instrument rated private pilot, N41EF was a Cozy 4 I was building before the Navy decided I needed to move from Charleston to Pearl Harbor. Still a sore subject, but I am actually looking at a Rotorway A600.
I have a few clients who hunt, and Aiken County has the longest gun deer season in the country so I have a full freezer. I make a thick venison chili for my client open house each Christmas plus a few batches each year for us. I put it in vaccum bags and freeze it, am planning on bringing a batch with me. I also do whole boston butts for pulled pork. I can get three on my smoker, so I cook 3 at a time, and section and freeze he other two.
I also do whole turkey breast on the smoker 4 at a time. Usually creole butter injected and then rubbed. I half them after cooking and bag and freeze them. They are good to slice for sandwiches or shred for turkey salad.
I'm trying to stop by and see two folks in the Asheville area on the way up, and Charlotte people on the way back. If I can get all my stuff in the bags great, but I'm thinking of bringing a bunch of food too so we'll have to see how the packing goes. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Well if I could get OTG to ride the 575 miles 2-up with his S.O. from Long Island to Marion in one day and live to tell of it, we would ride there.
OK...probably not.

Meh, I see no value in someone "putting in the miles." If it's your thing, good onya. It's not for me.
There are those of us that are built for lots of miles on the road like Shogs. I'm not one of those, and make no excuses for it.
I get highway hypnotized, sore, and bored if I'm on the road too long....by myself. In a group it's a lot easier to burn up the mileage. Shogs and I did 1k miles in a weekend for HL in 2010, including over 200 miles home....in the pouring rain....at night. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Dave,
The BORING 2 day slab ride from HL HQ to Marion had a certain NZ guy asking for mercy.
When Cathy, Jen and I went to HM V, we did the 900 miles each way with the truck and trailer in a single day. On the way back home I was sleeping in the back seat. Cathy riding shotgun, Jen at the wheel. Woke up to see Jen flipping through XM radio and wicking it up to 85mph,
But slabs suck. We will be comfy in the truck. Let's see what is on the trailer. _________________ John & Cathy

No excuses needed. This summer my buddy and I are going to trailer our bikes to Front Royal Va. then ride the Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I have done this before and the rides are great, generally not very crowded. The speed limits are low, but the roads wind and twist so you really need to be willing to take your time anyway. We will be riding our Airheads, he has a 74 R90/6 and I have my 75 r75/6, so who needs to slab? Now we just need a place in Front Royal to store our truck and trailer. I have been calling storage places, but they do not want short term deals. Anybody have any thoughts? _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I've done short term storage for a truck and trailer at the local airport. If it's a GA airport usually free, a bigger airport $6 to $10 per day but it's in a fence and on camera usually. _________________ 2014 R1200RT Water Cooled

Still a little gun shy about the long trips after my back surgery last summer... I'll be trailering the S1000 this year... I'll be at Deal's Gap at the Iron Horse Lodge the four days preceding HM if anyone would care to meet up there and ride. |

Not a whole lot. I would think that John could park his truck/trailer at OTG's cabin, I know that I'm parking my truck/trailer at my cabin(same as last year).
I would think that Shogs will have hers at the lodge.(same as last year)
Last couple of years, we just parked the trailers in the yard in front of the lodge, there were just 1 or 2 IIRC.
Otherwise I think there is a general parking lot near the main lodge at the entrance. _________________ Ride safe.
