Hi all , wondering if any one knows the source of the slight knocking all k1100s seem to have at varying degrees on start up when idling , it goes away with revs and is far less noticeable once warmed up . All my k's have fairly high mileage and the higher they are the louder the knock. I remember something about the rear output bearing and starter clutch can get noisy could one of these be the problem . Cheers AB

Can't speak to the source of that noise, but I just bumped my idle speed up to about 1000 rpms and the knock is no longer audible.

I think it means your K engine only has 300,000 miles left in it.

just my experience.
my 94 K1100LT developed a god-awful knock at idle then disappeared with a twist of the throttle.
after hours of searching and isolating components i discovered several cracks and a good sized hole (probably 1/2 inch diameter) in exhaust collector at muffler. had them welded up and now purring like a K-itty.
every scenario is different but this may be worth a look for you.

A knock that's audible at idle and goes away with increasing rpms can be due to unbalanced throttle bodies on a EFI engine or carbs on a carbureted bike. Both my previous K1100LT with 80,000 miles and my current one with 12,000 miles had roughly the same slight knock when cold. Pretty much went away as you advanced the fast idle toward the first notch.

I feel my"knock" through the clutch handle, could be the release bearing ,, but like the others it goes away with a little throttle or choke ,, I did get some noise from the exhaust but welding it quieted it down

Not sure what "knock" you're revering to. With a very low idle, like when the engine is real cold, there can be some knock, other than that there is an issue, can be a throttle sync as mentioned. The exhaust collector cracks are very common and can even lead to a valve failure, but I it doesn't feel like a "knock" to me.

Hello,

I had a knock at idle on my K1100...

After checking the throttle bodies (Balancing) and many other checks it turned out to be the "monkey nuts" in the alternator coupling!

All silent at idle now...

Best regards,

David

Same deal on my '93. When I updated to the bigger alternator I put new monkey nuts in and the knock went away.

Hello,

When I called the dealer (Motorworks in the UK) and asked for the 3 rubber inserts that are use in the alternator drive coupling, he said "Oh you mean the monkey nuts"...As the dealer called them that I figured it was a universally known term?

The do resemble nuts a bit...

Best regards,

David
