I'm trying to install a new to me thermo that N41EF was kind enough to donate to me for my hot running K. I know about the o-ring that has to be installed after the thermo and before the cover. But my old thermo also had a gasket around the outer flange. That old gasket is stretched to the point that it just falls off when I try to use it on the new one.
After TONS of research I found several conversations on this subject but never a real solution that doesn't cost a fortune. Where can I get one of these gaskets to fit an OEM thermo? Do I really even need it? Help!! I want to ride!

Wow. 44 views and not one reply? Has anyone had experience installing an OEM thermostat? If so, did you use a gasket on the outer flange of the thermostat or just the o-ring to seal it in place?. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess I've been lucky and been able to re-install the stat I removed with gaskets in place with no leaks.
I toyed with the idea of an after market t-stat(which is why I pulled it in the 1st place) but after taking some measurements and such, I ended up putting the original back in.

If the gasket have swelled it could be a sign that the coolant is oil contaminated.
A owner on another forum have baked the gasket at 350F ~30 minutes to shrink it back to it's original size.
Others have cut away 5-6 mm and put it back together with superglue. |

Success! I had also read about the baking of the gasket. I tried that today and made it work. Thermostat installed. New coolant. Installed new rear brake pads. Oil change. Managed to get the fairing, gas tank and seat put back on properly. Took her for a spin and all seemed great. Ran smooth. No leaks and never came close to getting hot. But it was only in the mid 60s when I rode so we'll see. Very happy!
