I was about to have this done, but am now thinking twice, as a result of the following video.
He's doing a 4 valve motor but just watch from 00:50 where he gives advice on the later 16 valve engines.
What do you think

Isn't that much work to check, then you know.

Gidday,

Over the last year or two I have gotten to know Chris well and we chat often via emails and Facebook and one of his first emails to me when I brought my bike which is a 94 K1100LT was

"Hi Grant,

The transmission should be removed every 40,000 miles so that the clutch hub / input shaft splines can be cleaned & lubricated. That’s it. Always check the Para-Lever pivot bearings for play. No reason to inspect the valve clearances on the 16 valve K engine. The K1 / 16 valve K100RS and the K1100RS models are the most reliable, maintenance-free BMW’s ever built J

You’re welcome here any time, Chris"

As far as my bike goes, if he says it then its a done deal for me, he is an extremely knowledgeable bloke, there's no bullshit about him and he says it like it is..

BTW if you can check them easily yourself and you know what you are doing then it doesn't and won't hurt to take a peak inside..

Last winter I checked mine and needed to adjust 9 out of 16- at the time the bike was closing in on 100,000km. The 9 were just out of range- too tight.

Opinions vary on this but by moving shims around I only needed to purchase 4 new ones, I had couple spares lying around too.

Yea, I checked them on my '95 a couple of years ago and had 3 that were out of spec, at about 95,000 miles.

Grant,

Other than a BMW R bike or maybe a MotoGuzzi, K bike valve checks are EASY to do.

If one or more need adjustment there are a few hints that help make it somewhat easier- less frustrating. Let us know how the check goes.

Gidday,

Many thanks and I will have a look at them over the coming weekend.

I have just brought complete new coolant system hoses, radiator and overflow tank caps and rubber washers which I plan to install this weekend as I am not sure how long these ones that are on it have been there, preventative maintenance I say!! Smile

Will let you know how it goes.

A full rubber hose replacement is in the works for me too (this winter).

Plus steering head bearings since I felt the slight but dreaded "detent" in the steering this past winter when I was changing the front tyre.

And might do new brake lines as long as I have the bike torn apart.
