Hi all... ((semi rant))
Well guess we all have different thresholds of 'pain'...and those seem to get more and more acute with age,, BUT ??
As some of you,, ( ie: the HMSP annual campers ) ,, know, I had to miss the last HMSP 'get together in Marion VA due to recuperation from a surgical procedure to my neck. The procedure known as Radio Frequency Nerve Ablation consists of having a needle driven into your vertebrae ( in my case in 16 places ) while you are motionless, wide awake and under a fluroscope. The "surgeon" asks you to develop a pain scale by imagining the WORST pain possible(10) and keeping him informed throughout the procedure as to where you are on a 1 to 10 basis.. I told him for me, a 10 on the PAIN SCALE is finding yourself behind 50 or more "black clad" Harley Davidsons out for their Sunday Poker Run at 45mph max, on a two lane (no shoulders) road with nowhere to pass for the next 50 miles !! That my friends, exceeds the (9) on my scale, which is an ice pick through each ear meeting "tip to tip" somewhere at the center !
Well yesterday 29 June 2014, we had here in Colebrook New Hampshire the annual Blessing of the Bikes ( Catholic ), to which even Hindus are invited to participate. Well while headed North on that lonesome stretch of forested road after leaving Groveton, NH, my worst PAIN scenario came true. I ( a deaf person ) heard them before I ever saw them, until suddenly there they were and I was closing on them far faster than the Star Ship Enterprise ... brakes on hard to keep from penetrating their group, it proved to be yet another agonizing two miles or so before I saw that the 'two by two' string of devil riders, ape hangers, and outstretched feet, extended way into the far distance beyond sight, and me with nowhere to pull over for a granola break...ie sheer pain and agony beyond what even I had imagined!
OK, maybe its me, maybe my K is a bad influence on me, maybe its overactive adrenalin, maybe its decades of 'full throttle' riding ..I dont know, but I simply CANNOT do 45 mph for hours at a whack without having a brain seizure!!! However, Divine Providence did again intervene on my behalf when an "out of business' " one time Cafe appeared with a dusty trash filled gravel parking lot in front.. my friends, it would not have been more welcome if it were a palm filled oasis filled with naked brown skin Harem girls and cool refreshments... BUT as I pulled in to 'defrag' and enjoy my dry granola energy bar,, I had to ask... at my age (72) "Does it get worse ??"
Ride safe my friends,,,the Summer is looking very good I hope !

Ernie,
A few years ago Cathy and I had the afternoon off and we thought dinner at a Mexican place would be nice. We took off and decided to go to Cafe Noche in Conway. Nice day for a ride, we went to Lincoln and got onto the Kanc'
Forgot that it was the start of bike week.
We were stuck behind a huge group of slightly muffled and straight piped H-Ds.
I literally couldn't hear or even feel my bike.
It was about 10-12 miles until we could turn off at Bear Notch road.
I kinda' know how you felt.
If "loud pipes save lives"...can you imagine what learning to ride could do? _________________ John & Cathy

Had a similar experience riding with my brother, he on his R1150 and me on my GW. It looked like an unending double row of HDs ahead of us on a great twisty road. They weren't going more than 45mph either, probably because HDs tend for fall apart at 50mph. Not wanting to damage a tire on dropped HD parts or ride some beautiful big sweepers at 45 we took a chance and blew past them. Got some dirty looks but we got by them without tucking into their formation more than twice. If it had gotten nasty I had the tool with me to equalize things but other than being flipped off there wasn't any incidents. I don't know why these guys run in such a big bunch without allowing traffic to pass them. Probably some kind of power trip or whatever. The noise was deafening for sure what a relief it was to breakout ahead of that bunch. _________________ Paul W.

...try the Black Hills during the rally. Luckily I can get on I-90 into Wyoming to get the K up to cruising speed. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

Excuse the mysticism here but if you google Doonesbury for July 6, 2014 you will see a reasonable explanation for why these guys ride like they do.

Good one Jim.
I haven't seen Doonesbury in quite a while.
Wonder what ever happened to Walden Puddle. _________________ John & Cathy

Dunno. Last time I read the comics, Lil Abner, Mandrake the Magician, Brenda Starr, Dick Tracy and maybe even Betty Boop were all there... _________________ Jim

Hi 'Rydor man" !!
Hey... really looking forward to seeing all of " yooouze guys" at the the next HM as well... and I'll be there even if I have to ride my Schwinn ! Luckily the K is again doing great, except for a brake incident last week on way back from NB/Canada.. all resolved now, pads replaced, and its ""..back on the throtle again..." as the song goes !!
What type of new (NOx) bike will you show up on come May '15 ??
Best regards, and do PLEASE ride safe....// Ernie in NH _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers
