1997 K1100LT 123000 miles ran like a dream, rarely broke
1994 K1100LT 60,000 breaks all the time.
Fall/Spring Problem 1) Ride bike warms up starved for fuel. Checked grounding, all hoses, everything I could find on websites that MAY be the issue. Including new Hall effect sensor. Changed out Motronic unit Problem solved. 1800 trouble free miles over 2-3 weeks.
Summer Problem... Bike warms up... Floods. If you leave it in third, and wound wide open...it will run until you have to back off the throttle for ...oh a car, a stop sign, etc. Then stalls. Just as before.....let it set for 10-20 minutes....starts right up runs fine for 5 miles or so floods. Before it starved for fuel.
I went to BMW told the parts counter I want the temperature sensor that controls the computer. THEY DON"T EVEN KNOW THERE ARE TWO...they have the one that goes in the standpipe from the block up to the radiator. That is $100 it is the only one they can find.
I think the one that controls stuff is on the block? Maybe center of the block on top? If I could buy one...I could know what it looks like, and just go find it...but I can't find a picture of where it is...what it looks like, or a good description of where to find it, just that it is on the top of the block?
I can't even find a mechanic that will work on it. Two mechanics have said...Oh I don't work on the K bikes anymore. Taking it to BMW Shop isn't affordable.....
How many sensors send information to the Motronic unit? If I have to tear the fairing off again I may as well replace every last one so that I can ride it rather than have it a fancy garage blocker.
Anyone in Denver know a mechanic that knows the K's?
Oh and I tried to run the diagnostic...pin one to ground lights an LED test light.....Makes me nervous to ground it out without a load? Am I being stupid?
Thanks

Ken, the motronic uses 2 temp sensors, 1 for coolant and 1 for intake air.
The coolant sensor is the one in the standpipe behind the radiator.
part #15 bmw # 12 61 1 341 602 @ $92
The air temp sensor is in the side of the airbox.
part #8 bmw #13 62 1 341 550 @ $47
The 3rd temp sensor is located on the bottom of the water/oil pump for the temp gauge mounted in the knee panel.
part #7 bmw #62 16 2 325 348 @ $43
Just out of curiosity, have you checked the TPS sensor, or the O2 sensor to make sure they aren't bad/dirty connectors, etc...... _________________ Ride safe.

Thank you Scott
I am pretty sure that 15 is the sensor that the BMW shop has. I will pull it apart in the morning and check these. _________________ Ken in Denver |

I emailed you the resistances for that sensor at various temps. Once you've removed it, before buying a new one, see what it measures at room temp and then see what it measures when submerged in boiling water. That should tell you if it's the problem or not. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks Guys. The water heat sensor was about 200 ohms off. New one in, and 400 miles of Colorado mountain riding today. Independence Pass to Aspen.
Can't thank you enough for the advice.
