Ok, so I'm ready to post finally. Bike is tagged, insured and home. I tend to be a pessimist until I have good paperwork and such.
I bought a 93 K1100 LT on eBay after lurking here for weeks and researching. Not new to eBay and understand the hazzards of buying online sight unseen. But after asking question, several emails, and many many hours reading the stuff here I thought it was a decent bike at a price I could swallow. I rode several Sportsters, and though I like the image and sound it wasn't a bike I'd want to ride 200 miles.
From the paperwork and maintenance records I'm the 3rd owner with less than 14000 miles. Original owner took it to the dealer for yearly maintenance. Second owner let it sit a while and then took it for a battery and new rear tire before he sold it. Front tire still has nubs so it's recent too. Only came with the folding key so I found blanks on eBay and now have spares.
One cool thing it came with the BMW battery tender that plugs intot he bike directly, pretty neat.
About me: Retired Navy, submariner, was a nuclear electronics technician. Retired in 2000 and became a Financial Advisor, dealing with clients and on the computer all day I like to come home and tinker in the garage. I'm an instrument rated pilot and have worked on many homebuilt aircraft, wiring is my thing.
I'm an old school car guy in a new school world. I like to adjust and tweak thing, like the quadrajet on a '71 Corvette I had. New school requires computers and software. Notible cars: 63 Impala, 71 Corvette, 74 Opel Manta Rallye, (3) Type 4 Buses, Volvo 855, (3) TDI Beetles, 03 Porsche Boxster, a 2011 TDI Golf, 2009 MB ML 320 Bluetec, and a 09 Smart FourTwo.
I got my MC license at 14 in Oklahoma. My street bikes started with a 76 Honda CB125, 77 Honda CB750 SS, 83 Honda 650 Nighthawk, Kaw 440 LTD, Honda 550 Nighthawk, a BSA 250. Several dirtbikes over the years. I sold my last bike in 2007 and havent riden since. I like the idea of simple routine maintenenace and clean pants legs from shaft drive or belt drive bikes. I have an incredible set of tools. With the right internet search I'll try to fix anything.
My last "project" was a 79 Crysler 22 foot sailboat. I rebuilt the swing keel and designed and built an electrical system for it. Had sailed a little before, and this is the biggest boat I could find that I could lauch and sail solo if I needed to.
I like to sit and surf the net at night, looking for the solution to some minor problem.
I'm always thankful for thse who have gone before me, and for those who figured out that a Kia solenoid valve wlll work on a Land Rover at a fraction of the price. I Hope to be a worthwile member here and share in the collective knowledge. |

Welcome to the collective..........
Nice looking ride.
FYI, check the date's on the tires. Just because the nubs are still there doesn't mean that they still can't be old, just not ridden. _________________ Ride safe.

Your garage is very spartan.
Hmmm... I bought my 93 LT with just under 14K and I am the third owner. That was nine years ago.
Looks like a great purchase! _________________ 93 LT (x2)

BTW: Run it on dino(not synth) oil until it hits 20K in order to give the rings a chance to seat properly. I'd go with Castrol 20/50. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Ok, good catch on the date code. Front tire is Metzler dates 2209, which is 4 plus years old. Rear tire is Metzler dated 0503, which is 2003 or 2013? Invoice says that tire was installed in 2013. Cautiously optimistic on that one.
An Oil thread? You guys are worse than the Land Rover guys. Is the 16v K1100 a solid lifter or roller lifter design. LR guys swear by HTSS oil to protect the cams. I'll be changing the oil this weekend I had to order a K&N filter, and dino 20w-50 until the 20k as suggested.
For oil porn guys my current fav synthetic is Mobile 1 5w-40 ESP M, it satisfies my diesels, and when NAPA ran it on sale last month for 5.99 a quart I bought 48 quarts. I use it in lawnmowers and everything else. MB diesels take 8 quarts for an oil change, I have mine and also service three others for friends.
Second favorite is Mobile 1 5w-40 turbo diesel truck. A5/B5 E7, just not for diesels with a particulate filter. Autozone ran it for 12.99 in January, I bought 6 gallons. |

Seems like someone installed a "new" tire that is 10 years old. I just checked every tire in the driveway, most are 3512 or similar, so I assume mine is really 2003. If I was the person who paid for the tire, and it wasn't 400 miles to the dealer who installed it, I would start trying to get a new tire. However, I hve no way to prove that tire hasn't been swapped again. I'm guessing the Easter Bunny may have to do some tire shopping for me. |

The 16V is a double overhead cam design. Solid cam followers that very in thickness for adjusting valve clearance. _________________ Ride safe.
