|
|
I have a k1100rs with 42,000 miles. It won't go into neutral when the engine is running, so I deduce clutch drag. The clutch cable/arm/etc. is correctly adjusted, so far as I can tell. This seems a low mileage to have anything seriously wrong with the clutch, so before I pull it apart to look, does anyone know of a common cause of this problem? It's my first bmw so all experienced help appreciated! _________________ Brian's Magic World

Do you have any trouble shifting between the gears when riding? _________________ Ride safe.

Hi, I've had some false neutrals (maybe twice) and difficulty getting into a gear (maybe only once). I don't know the k1100 (or any other bmw models) well enough to know if these were anything unusual.
I bought this off someone who was unwell, and said he was selling for health reasons. I think from what records I have it had been stood at some stage for a year, maybe even two. _________________ Brian's Magic World

Are you (with the clutch pulled in) coming to a stop in a higher gear and then trying to shift to N? If so you need to tweak the clutch a little in between gears when downshifting. The transmission does not have synchromesh like a car. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

No, I'm working down the gears as usual but then just can't get into neutral from second, or even from first. I started riding on a Matchless 250 in the early 70's, have since then had Japanese bikes, including shaft drives (CX500, 1000GTR). So far as I can tell this 'symptom' is not described in any internet forum except perhaps in the case of a fairly high mileage k11 (75,000; worn clutch splines). The 42,000 mileage seems, from the records that came with the bike, authentic. _________________ Brian's Magic World

It sounds to me like it's time to lube the transmission input shaft clutch splines.
Old, dried and or dirty grease will not allow the clutch friction disk to float free when you release the pressure plate and if it can't float free, it will "drag" and cause slight rotation to the transmission input shaft when you are trying to change gears.
More prevalent when down shifting, not up shifting. _________________ Ride safe.

Dry splines is likely but, before you get carried away, remove all the clutch free play from the cable and adjuster and see if it improves. If it does, bring the free play back to the clutch adjustment but not the cable yet. If still good, add the cable free play.
Be a shame to tear it apart because you have a cable that is stretching. |

Along the line of cable stretching, check the cable at the clutch lever barrel connection and see if it is starting to break, BTDT as the strands start to break it will stretch...... _________________ Ride safe.

Several years ago I experienced false neutrals and difficulty downshifting 3rd to 2nd. The bike had just a little over 30k on it with a dealer spline lube by previous owner 5k earlier. Two weeks later the splines in the clutch plate stripped and left me a foot in the N.C. mts. Replaced the plate and lubed everything with Guard Dog moly with the help of the folks on this site. No problems since. If I could ride as smoothly as it shifts now I'd be a happy man. _________________ 1995 K1100 LT
