|
|
Hey all. Riding home last night on my 1995 K1100LT, heard a loud pop and immediately got a facefull of hot coolant. Coolant pretty much sprayed everywhere - made it home and had to strip down to my skivvies in the garage before my wife would let me in the house.
Anyway....I figure/hope it's a blown radiator hose of some kind. Source if the noise and subsequent shower looks to be inside the fairing but deep in there. I have not looked at it yet, but was hoping I could get some experience advice before I dig into it. To start with, should I remove the entire fairing or is there another/better way to access the radiator and hoses? Could there be another problem and I am being way to optimistic in regard to the symptoms?
Any advice would be appreciated. _________________ db

No - you don't have to take the whole fairing off - just the lower parts. _________________ Jim

You will also have to pull the fuel tank back to reach the filler cap. _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks. Started getting the lower fairing parts off. It's a mess in there. Probably going to pull the whole thing off. Only way to clean it out and see what's going on.
Going to see if there's a post about pulling the crash bars off the frame. Never done that before either. _________________ db

there are 2 nuts where the bottom connects at the oil ban, and for the top bar you have to remove the black end cap use a socket with extension to reach the nut on the inside. There should be a washer or 2 behind the nut.
A deep well socket would work best. _________________ Ride safe.

Yup. Found it! Found the broke hose too. Now looks like I'll need to pull the radiator to get to it. At least it looks like I'll learn a bunch more about my bike. _________________ db

Sounds like it may be time to replace ALL of the hoses. They will all be the same age..... _________________ Ride safe.

|

Well - the hose repair seemed to go well. Looks like I have some oil in my coolant. So, I'm going to repair the seals in the water/oil pump using the online resources that are out there.
Any recent advice would be appreciated. Parts are on order, so I expect to be on it next weekend.
Also, before I realized what that gunk in the coolant was (I cleaned out the hoses and radiator) I did run the bike. Seemed to run fine, but I put it on the side stand and a small amount of (what looked like) coolant came out the real underside of the bike just in front of the footpeg on the left. I can't find anywhere that is leaking or even wet on the hoses or radiator. The fill cap looks fine too. All I can think is there was some coolant left on the block somewhere from the first break and it just drained when I put the bike over on the stand.
Any ideas there would be appreicated too. _________________ db
