1. Remove seat
2. Disconnect fuel level sender wiring
3. Remove two clips on the posts at the rear corners of the gas tank
4. Lift up the rear of the tank and pull it back to expose the two hose clamps at the left front of the tank
5. Undo hose clamps and take off fuel lines
It's best to either run the tank low or siphon gas out of it before doing this. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Fairing removal NOT necessary.
Take off both side panels & raise the seat. look at the rear of the tank underneath. Find two pins that go through rubbers held by the frame. If truly original there will be C clips on these pins. Remove.

Item 15 2 off
If your are sure they are not there, then grab the rear of the tank & yank upwards (no insult intended). Be careful of the cable from the loom which runs into the tank, they are a common failure point.
Once free, ease rear wards to release from front rubbers. Bear in mind that the fuel pipes will impede complete removal. If the tank is 1/4 full or less then It can be hung over the left side with a bungee & a rag to prevent scratching the tank & fairing.
As for replacing the clutch cable, may I suggest you tape the new to the old & pull it through, guiding it past the tight bits. That way you will preserve the smoothest route, as BMW intended.

What cable? If it's the clutch cable then you don't need to remove the tank.
Tie a piece of wire or strong string to the rear of it before pulling it out the front and then use that to pull the new one through _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I just became aware that my brake light also stays on,
also a single filament bulb in place,
on a '93 K1100RS,
the front handle / rear pedal contacts are fine as I can cycle through the ABS startup check.
also as per ABS,
for the past three summers the ABS intermittently flashes fail, until the next ignition off cycle, after which it all returns to normal. turning the ignition off on a long stretch of road , and back on for example ...
any ideas ?? _________________ let's do it

for some reason I find the idea of removing/lifting the tank totally daunting,
I'd like to pass some wiring, check my relays, etc. and I can't wrap my head around the fact it can be not too complicated ...
yes triple negatives

Firecat, the tank removal is very easy, just make sure you are very low on gas, or siphon out what you have in there, that is what i did _________________ 1993 K1100LT

Firecat,
At least on the K-RS, removing the fuel tank is pretty easy.
-the two black panels alongside the tank come off.
-then tilt up the seat and find/disconnect the 4 wire plug under the right rear of the tank. (these go to the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit)
-tilt up the rear portion of the tank enough to detach the two fuel lines under the left side of the tank- a little fuel will dribble out of the lines.
-now with the rear of the tank still tilted up, wiggle the tank side to side and slide it back. It should now come off in your hands. Done. _________________ John & Cathy

Do not forget to remove the C clips holding the tank down if they are still on there, read above post about how too. That was what had me stumped, once i found out about those, it was super easy and only a little messy. _________________ 1993 K1100LT

well that's great info thanks,
I want to run some wiring, an EB kit,
and clean and grease all relays, 'cause I have some misbehaving light, ABS, intermitent relay related issues, I think,
can I just lift the tank, or should I remove it.

Phil,
Your job will be MUCH easier if you pull the tank off. Unless you are a proctologist and like to work in very small and dark places....and have VERY small hands.
Seriously, I don't think that the tank tilts up enough (the top front of the tank will hit the steering head) to do any work under there.

If you are careful, and have the seat removed, you can pull the fuel tank and set it on the frame rails where the seat sits without of removing the fuel lines. You do have to unplug the electrical connections.

I don't have to remove the elec connector on mine to balance the tank on the seat rails. Maybe the wires are routed a little different or a wire tie removed somewhere.

Guys/dolls,
A little late on this but I just wanted to say that yes it was a piece of cake, it was just a matter of mind over matter. Even with the tank almost full, pulling it off was no problem.
Thanks for the advice _________________ let's do it

I splurged a bit and bought a set of quick disconnects so I don't have to remove the fuel lines, just disconnect them. Makes for very quick and easy tank removal. _________________ Paul W.
