Been using these:
http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/NR-Earphones-p-20183.html
Pricy, yes. But great noise reduction. Can listen to my iPod at very low volume levels while they block out nearly all the wind noise at 70+mph on my K-RS. _________________ John & Cathy

I've got the custom molded earplugs. One set just the plugs, one set with the ear speakers. The only way to go! _________________ Rod Kilduff

These also work great. You squeeze them and then insert them into your ear and they expand like HERO ear plugs and block out a lot of noise. _________________ Rich

The amount of wind noise generated is relative to seating position, wind deflection, helmet fitment, etc. I don't like the distraction of radios or ear buds and, as such, only wish for a decrease in db levels. I have found any disposable ear plug rated at 33db does the job. Howard Leight plugs have that rating and are sold locally at Walgreens and Safeway markets.
I've used several types of hearing protection over the years and still have normal hearing. Too, I am a long time participant in the shooting sports, so, I feel fortunate to not have hearing loss. Shooters often opt for an electronic earphone that allows or amplifies normal hearing but cuts off when db reaches higher levels. Following that technology, or adapting it from military fighter helmets, an integral helmet system that cuts extraneous white noise and limits db levels seems feasible but could be costly.
Morris Kruemke, Texas innovator, adapted white noise canceling in one of his experimental helmets. It was marvelous! When switched on, all noise abated yet normal conversation could be heard. Taking the helmet for a ride was truly amazing. But, he spent a lot of money on the project and concluded it was cost prohibitive at that point in time. Hopefully, that could change. |

I have tried about every foam ear plug there is. Friends said try these, try those. Couldn't get any to work properly. Goes double for ear buds for MP3 player. Tried JVC's on Drake's previous recommendation. Better but no joy. They still fall out.
I think my ear canal is deformed.
3 yrs ago at BMW rally in West Bend got fitted "plug ups" (attractive sales girl) $200 w/phone but they are wonderful.
Think I will try hockeyshifters idea. Want back up and separate set for Zune.
Worth a try anyway.
Envy those who can use the cheapies!

Here is something I wrote quite some time ago, as such it is a bit dated but still holds true. I am a huge believer in the Howard Leight Laser-Lite plugs, and am still working my way through a box of 200 I bought some time ago (they are MUCH cheaper that way...) I bought a big variety pack and tried a bunch, the laser-lites fit me exceedingly well. Conney Safety used to send it for free but I don't think they do that anymore.
I will say that the expanding foam plugs can be tricky to properly insert at first, it takes some practice to learn to get them in correctly. Even when in, if not inserted correctly they are practically useless. HL has a good "how to insert" here and I would add only that I find licking the tip of a finger to clean/lube the outside of the ear canal makes them go in much easier.
I do recommend buying a box of 200 pairs (under $30 at Conney) and then throwing them away after each use. _________________ Ted

I am hooked on the EAR ear soft grippers. They got a great write up on Web Bike World, so I figured I would try them. Love them! I also have the custom molded with and without music, but the EAR soft grippers are great for disposables. +1 on buying a box.

I also use the HL laser lite's as well as their Max Lite's.
The Laser lites have a NRR 32 rating.
The Max lites have a NRR 30 rating.
I realy can't tell the difference between them as far as the sound goes.
The wind noise is really reduced and I can hear my music/directions quite well.
I think the Max lites are easier on my ears as the foam is a little softer when expanding, less pressure on the ear canal. _________________ Ride safe.

Added note: Once the Leight plugs are rolled tightly, I lick them and insert into the ear canal. This allows them to seat deeper, yet, the flange on the plug still allows for easy removal. I just wish they came in a variety of flavors. |

If you let Conney know you're interested in a trial pack, Sperian Protection Americas will send you a bunch of different ear plugs to try - I just got 30 packs of them!

30 plugs or 20 trial packs LOL
So do I just call Conney and ask for the free Leight variety pack and Sperian sends it? _________________ Ted

I have discovered Surefire makes rubber plugs that fit very well they come in different sizes you need to check them out. They fit well under the helmet, I just installed speakers in my helmet tried it out for the first time today and WOW. No wind just enough noise from the engine and plenty of volume on the tunes. _________________ The quieter you are the more you can here. |
