Problem: this vent hemorrhages fuel when the fuel cell is full AND the bike is on the side stand.
Solution: Insert a value.
Note to self: MUST remember to OPEN the value as soon as the bike is vertical and BEFORE leaving the gas station!
I went to the local Speed shop and learned that the expensive roll over shut off fuel vents have to exceed 90 degrees of tip before the ball bearing shuts off fuel escaping.
Cost = $2.35

I think brain surgery from the wrong end of python requires FAR LESS moving or removing of s*it to work on than digging my way to where the fan motor it mounted.
It quit working today.
Fuse is good.
Wiring directly to the battery (bypassing the relay) - no joy. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

ugh!
Of all things to go now!
Somewhere on here someone has a fan upgrade I'm sure.
But then of course that one lasted a number of years. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

Shogs, whether you replace it or fix it, either way it has to come out.
I have one in a box in the garage that I got with a radiator purchase if you need it.
Chances are you can free up yours and it will live again...... _________________ Ride safe.

Thanks Scott, but I think I'll just get a new one. That way I can rest easy for another 100,000 miles.
It was seized. While I'm this deep I'm going to replace the thermostat also.
It's difficult to turn by hand which confirms full failure.
The up-side is it happened now and not on some long motorcycle ride across counry. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Can you tell me the brand and/or source for the ambient temperature gauge you showed on page 19 of this thread. I think I'd like to have one of those for my truck.
Thanks,

Hi Rod,
I'll post the exact ordering location as soon as I can.
Internet sites are restricted at work and I'm working 13 hour nights shift x 3 (Sat, Sun, Mon)
Please bear with me.

It was like an Easter Egg hunt, I kept finding nuts, bolts, washers and one LED lamp that fell into the bowels of the bike while working on it since I bought the bike.
Oh, and who knew a radiator flush was included with EVERY fan removal. :baldy
Done. If you have ever had to pull a fan out of a K11 you will understand why I made this wire a little longer.
Holy poop! :huh
How they ever managed to make that connection...it MUST have been assembled before any other wire was fished thru the frame.

I’ve been extremely busy with work, life, riding and wrenching and have not kept this thread up to date.
Note to self, a penny saved is NOT a penny earned if by installing an older, used fan motor ALSO fails.
Color me EXTREMELY not happy about going BACK in the damn bike THAT damn far AGAIN!
Yes, I tested it before installing it.
So I have 7 days off and this is the “To Do List”
1. Install BRAND new fan motor
2. Install electronic cruise control
3. Remove and remount fuel cell so that the top case bolts go all the way to the frame
4. Work on fuel gauge
5. Replace pannier lid support
6. Repair CPAP AC/DC converter
7. Re-set Smart Tire
8. Apply reflective tape to panniers
9. Transfer the Shop Whore license tag to this bike
10. Make new license plate holder _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I finished the fuel cell hard mount at 0300 this morning. Then I slept until 0830. Today, as of this post, I'm re-assembling the new fan motor in the housing.
I had to stop working on it to help my husband install new struts on our Subaru Outback. I was too tired to cook so we ordered out pizza.
Kitchen cleaned and coffee brewing...I plan to finish the fan, refill the cooling system and maybe start the cruise control before going to bed. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I'm going to attempt to get this thread caught up today.
Prior to the ride it was a whirlwind of work on the bike and I'm sure I didn't document as well as I could have with photos so bear with me.
I'll start with the fan FUBAR.
I think I found the problem.

So there I was AGAIN looking at this.
K1100RS gutted on the lift. Pay special attention to the short metal pipe raising from the top of the engine block…this will come into pay later.
Here you can see the one bolt that holds the radiator in place.
To the right of that white spacer is a TINY O-ring….do not lose it…just sayin’.
My solution to that is to tape it to the bike.
I bought a NEW fan motor from Euro Motoelectric.
First I identified the left/right connections. I knew if I wired it wrong it would just run backwards but I still didn’t want that to happen.
Then I started wiring it up.
I managed to figure out how to punch out / off the fan blades.

Note to self…when re-installing the metal clips that hold the motor cover to fan cowling make SURE to orient the housing so that it doesn’t foul with the clip location otherwise you’ll spend 30 min in frustration again.

As some you may recall from Hungry Mother last year the fuel cell rack came loose on a ride. It wasn't the first time that had happened so I decided to approach it differently.
The next project was to strengthen and reinforce the fuel cell mount.
This is where I started from. The allen head bolts have been a problem in the past in that they would fall out, even with blue thread lock.
My concept was secure the rack in a manner that would attach it to the frame and provide the cowling support that would spread the 40 pounds when full weight of the fuel cell across a wider surface.
This is my finely crafted CAD drawing of my idea.
Instead of using bolts, I installed all thread with RED thread lock.
Cut some aluminum bar.
Strengthened the rear mounting points.
Then I began crafting a way to attach it to the frame. I did NOT want to cut the frame no matter what.
Note the larger rubber washers and grade 8 washers.
I made some u-bolt hangers out of stainless steel hose clamps.
Then I cut thru the cowling bed pan to wrap them around the frame from underneath.
I used wal-mart flip-flop sandals as spacer / vibration dampening material.
This is what it looks like from the underside.
I think at this point one could lift the entire bike with a crane using that that rack.
.
Update after 10,000 miles...it is still rock solid! _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
