Good morning all...
Been away working, and have just in the last days got to catchup on forum topics.. This "hot a$$" problem has not been an issue with me and until recently I have been riding in the very hot deep south (USA) where it should have been a problem..eh? However, some time ago I bought a thick sheepskin( IKEA) and fitted it to my K1100 stock seat with elastic clips, and since then have never had a problem, the 'buns' remain dry and comfortable, and no itching or other discomfort related to excess heat.... maybe a simple solution like this could be your answer ?
Good luck............// Ernie in NH[/i] _________________ AMA,, American Deaf Bikers

Thanks for the suggestion, Ernie. I own a nice sheepskin, and it works well. My problem with it on this particular bike, is that it puts me that much further from the ground. I'm somewhat precariously perched on the balls of my feet when at a standstill, which makes me pretty uncomfortable in the first place. Adding the thickness of (my) sheepskin to the equasion, while possibly solving the hot butt problem, may well create a much more intollerable one . . . if ya know what I mean. _________________ Scot

Scot,
That is a Canyon Dual Sport you have there.
Like I said, some folks love 'em and many hate them.
Have you thought of using the sheepskin but trying a shorter rear shock? That might be a good combo for you.
Just a suggestion.
BTW, Columbus, Ohio? You are not that far from our annual K bike get together at Hungry Mother State Park- Virginia- next one in May. Good time, good riding, GREAT people.

Thanks for the info, John. I'm curious about the Dual Tour model and its shape, as compared to what I've got. Could you maybe post a pic of yours?
As for lowering the bike . . . I like the idea . . . I think. I really wouldn't know where to start, though. I have so many questions, and the one that pops immediately to mind is . . . what's it gonna cost me? I've not done any serious research, but I've seen some pretty damn expensive shock absorbers out there.
Could I gain as much as 2"? That'd be nice, but any amount would help. How does a shorter shock affect the handling and the ride?
If you, or anyone could steer me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.
edit: Oh, yeah! The gathering in Virginia in May . . . I think it was you who graciously invited me to this year's event. I was unable to make it cuz I didn't have any vacation left. However, this (next) year, I gain another week of vacation, so the Hungry Mother event is on my calendar, and I'm really lookin' forward to it! _________________ Scot

HM VI here we come.
Anyway here are a few pictures with and without Cathy's FAVORITE accessory- the backrest.
Hope this helps. BTW, I feel like I sit slightly lower on this seat than I do on the Dual Sport. Maybe it could help you.
I bought the Dual Tour used through the Flea Market section of the BMWMOA website _________________ John & Cathy

I'm afraid I prejudiced (and spoiled) myself when I bought a Russell Day-Long for my airhead. By far, the most comfy saddle I've ever owned.
Hey Maybe they could make one with a built in heat shield! _________________ Scot

Hello all...
Here we are talking about, bike lowering, heat shields, different model seats etc... and I have often wondered IF anyone had ever made or tried a seat design such as that once used by the U.S. and Canadian Cavalries back in the mid to late 1800's ?? I thought about this just recently when I saw one for sale in PA. The design is similar to a regular equine saddle with the exception that a wide slot separates the 'right half' of the saddle from the 'left half'.. the purpose being to ventilate the rider's rear, but also to take any pressure away from the scrotum and lower spine that would be painful after long hours of mounted duty. Of course our female members would not have to worry about the former, but the ventilation would be a plus for riders of any gender. IF our "K" bikes are in fact so damn hot that the seat becomes uncomfortable, perhaps a new seat design is in order ?? Any comments ??

I had the Dual Canyon on my previously owned K and I was not impressed. Hard as a park bench.
But I never had the hot seat issue, usually it was my shins that got roasted.
Only the Airhawk II cushion made the Canyon tolerable, and I'm built a lot like Sugar, tall and skinny assed!
BTW, tha Airhawk is still serving admirably on my new Wee...

I'm gonna pursue this shorter rear shock deal, but I need some help.
Can anyone give me an idea of what length shock I need? Who offers them? How much are they? How many inches can I gain? _________________ Scot

Hello everyone.
I've been Lurking for a good while now and got a lot out of the site.
I thought perhaps you might be interested in my attempts to defeat 'burnt backside' syndrome and lower my bike.
Here's my old girl:
As you can see I have a cream saddle cover and I've cut down the original BMW king&queen by about two inches. Fitting an early k75 shock gave me another 1.5-2 inches. Strangely enough I found the front fork springs had collapsed by about two inches so I didn't have to adjust the front.
Having a light-coloured seat makes a big difference to how hot it gets. I can park in full sunshine and put my hand right on the seat. I suggest wrapping a white towel or blanket round a hot seat and going for a ride see if that helps.
As to the comfort of the cut-down seat, I've not been far on it yet but I did a run down to Somerset and back (about 160 miles each way) and it was fine. Steering neutral and handling fine. I'm well pleased.
OK - hope the post works, _________________ ________________________
