On the ride to work friday afternoon , the clutch lever started feeling a bit odd. I nursed it home around 10.30pm , sourced a replacement saturday & this is what i found this morning when i replaced it....
I consider myself very lucky it made the 40km ( 24 mile ) journey home ! |

WOW!
You got all the life out of that cable.
Good you made it home.
I have inspected the ends on my K-RS but carry a spare if I am traveling far from home. _________________ John & Cathy

Due to the tortuous route it takes under the tank, I would advise fitting the spare along side the replacement, a lot easier to swap at the roadside. _________________ Regards Tim,

I find i think i get funnier in direct proportion to the quantity & frequency of alcohol consumed. Speaking of which, it's my day off & i'm sober & responding to this post. Not funny - beer o'clock it is then |

Hi !
Well it looks like typical failure caused by lack of "end barrel" lubrication. I would recommend, instead of spare clutch cable, to put on regular manner grease into the clutch handle on contact surface with mentioned end barrel.
Those cables can last forever (bikes from 1985 have original one) if maintained well.
The barrel should rotate inside the handle. If it does not, the cable start to be bend at one point each time the clutch handle is pulled - that's the source of many failures.
Best regards, _________________ Rafal

I've had my LT since 2000, and I've been through 4 cables read my lips 4. I used a replacement aftermarket one, but that was more of a hassell than anything. I always carry a spare, going for a ride to Gympie in a few weeks, that will clock up some?
Cheers
Lou

A cable breaks at it's weakest point. When a cable is bent at a tight angle the stress starts to weaken the metal fiber.
The BMW clutch lever was designed with a brass "insert" that is supposed to rotate and alleviate any bending as the handle is pulled. Thus allowing the cable to be pulled straight and no flexing stress. If you have gone thru 4 cables in 10 years, you have a problem other than the cable.
Lubrication of that barrel insert is a very important maintenance task that isn't spelled out very well in the maintenance manuals.
There is also the possibility that the barrel is worn to the point of physically binding in the handle causing extra stress on the cable fibers, or between the barrel being worn and the carrier hole in the handle being worn causing the binding and broken cables.
I'd suggest taking a good hard look at your handle and insert assy for any binding, and replacing them if they look excessively worn. _________________ Ride safe.
