Lots of work has taken place in my cramped, over-warm shed. The bulb monitor has been re-fitted and is now working fine. 'New' braided front brake lines were fitted and the brakes successfully bled, again thanks to the info on this site - though I did squirt brake fluid everywhere, including all over myself. Must be more careful with those syringes, next time.
The best bit, though, is I got the ABS to work. The voltmeter test showed fault 3, front sensor. A glance at the sensor showed a huge clearance between sensor and rotor. Aha! thought I, remove sensor, remove a shim, job done. Wrong - although this bike does not show much corrosion generally, that sensor was stuck fast. Basically, I destroyed it getting it out. Time to shop on Ebay again. One secondhand sensor later (for a GS1100, actually), shimmed correctly and greased on assembly, all that remained was to trace the reset wires (no switch remember), extend them to under the side panel, and connect them to create a makeshift reset switch. And it worked I haven't had the bottle to brake test it properly yet though.
Round one of trying to remove the alternator to replace the cush drive rubbers has taken place. I just couldn't get at that third bolt. Although I've read on here that the ABS unit needn't be removed, it looked to me like it would make life 'easier'. Which is where I came unstuck, as I couldn't undo some of the brake unions either. Many Anglo-Saxon words were uttered at this point (golly gosh, things like that). A brake line spanner (a ring spanner with a cutout) is on order, when round 2 will take place.
Once that is done, I'll watch the oil leaks for a while before I decide what to do next. My clutch bell housing is weeping slightly (engine oil, I think) and possibly the clutch boot also. A reseal of the sump plate wouldn't do any harm either. Oh, yes, and my rear master cylinder is suspect as well (front done already).
Anyone want to buy a K1100RS, needs slight attention? No, really, it's a great bike - as long as you're riding it, not sweating over it. |

Good for you. Let's hope you never need to use the ABS in earnest. But it's good to know it's there & working.
IIRC the third alternator bolt is best removed with a 3/8 drive socket set. _________________ Regards Tim,

Thanks Tim, yes, got the socket set - kept dropping the allen drive bit down the back of the starter motor, not one of my better days. |
