Hi to all
New member here on this great forum which I'm enjoying all the reads so far.
A new owner of a K1100 LT 1993 with 84,000 mls on and going strong.
Bought with an initial problem on her which I've sorted.
Bogged down, no power as if she was missfiring and accassionally back firing through the air intake.
Fitted new NGK spark plugs had the throttle bodies checked for balancing, which it turned out they were ok. Checked air breather which again looked like new.
The main problem was the breather pipe from the crankcase which joins the pipe on the back side of the throttle boddies was OFF. So, fitted that back securely and tighted all throttle body rubbers, which did re-tighed quite some. Problem rectifed in an instant. Pulls away like a lion now from 30 mph in top like she ought with no back fires or misses, a happy bunny I am.
Also just purchased a after market tall screen, Oh...and a clutch cable that snapped on me right on the nipple lever end, from Motorworks in the UK. Quite funny really to say I've hardly rode her, if it's going to happen it'll happen to me lol.
Looking forward now to some serious riding in the next months as the English weather is about to get better me hopes.
Just wondering if any of you can direct me to the best place for some acrylic basecote paint, other than my local car auto paint supplier. I intend to do some bodywork painting etc on my bike, this again I'm going to enjoy as I did do bodywork for a proffession some years back and still got enough gear and no how to under go some spraying. My bike is of the dark anthracite color.
Anyhow, so pleased to be amongst you all and will most certainly hang around these parts with you all...
Cheers n beers from the UK to ya'll...
PS: I will post some pics of me and the bike ASAP _________________ k1100 LT 1993 85,000 mls

Hi, and great intro! Look forward to the pics
I've always found NuAgaine very good for bodyshop stuff and paint online. I'm an ex body and paint guy myself!

Hi ya Tiff, good to meet up with you.
Just checked NuAgaine out, they do seem decent on prices.
I'm looking out for some acryic basecoat already mixed, pre-mixed as near to the color of the bike as I can get. Really a dark grey gun metal, charcoal metalic color. Will work out cheaper for paint this way as you know, rather than them have to mix of the scheme. Will get away with doing it this way as all panels on bike really need fully painting.
I wonder why all the fuss about the price though, hence if you do a good job and look after things, paintwork lasts doesn't it? Will probably get away with half ltr basecote for all stuff anyhow.
Already got a stock of Laquer hardner and primers in.
I had 14 yrs in the paint business self employed motor trade. Had a good setup with a Sikens paint Scheme and Devilbiss cross flow oven / booth. Been finished 16 yrs now. Water base was just coming in when I finished and all the HVLP gear.
Really looking forward in tidying up my brick and putting it back to some respective. It will be a pleasure to work on small panels compared to cars vans etc...lol
What you done in the paint busy then ? _________________ k1100 LT 1993 85,000 mls

I've got paintwork to tidy up on my K too- both pannier lids and both mirrors. Had an argument with the guy in my local paint suppliers that the bike paint codes weren't different to the car codes. I won.... Aspen silver is the same code for both 4 wheelers and 2. If this is normal, your paint code should be 397 or 704
I got 5 litres of ready mixed dark graphite metallic acrylic from NuAgaine a few years back- painted my RF900with it and it turned out really nice. The basecoat and laquuer in the same tin, never seen it before but went on really well and flatted and polished up like a factory job.
From this...

I still keep my hand in from time to time, resprayed a Merc C class last year, and a Morris minor! |

Got ya Tiff. I must admit, all the years in the car painting mixing from car codes with my then Sikens scheme, I never did mix any bike codes up.
A nice job you did on the RF900 with the single pack stuff.
I do still really prefer 2k as you know it's the ultimate in durability and is easier to work with.
I remember years ago we done repaints in metalic synthetic, tidying up bangers etc. Flippen heck...you did have to get that right or it was curtains...literally. I always remember almost applying it dry and waiting round 10 or 15 mins for the lust to magically appear. Also remember in my learning days in doing the opposite, going for a finish and the whole lot running off...lol those were the days when everything was stuck together including eye brows and such lol.
I've just found a full ltr of moondust silver basecote here un-thinned, wouldn't take much to change my bricks color would it? lol. I wouldn't dream of color changing a car, although I did in my day through the customers choice, not a good thing to do as you know, devaluing etc. But a bike is slightly differenct isn't it? No door shuts door edges under bonnet inside boots and so on to deal with. Infact all in all pretty much 7 panels on the k1100 LT, a doddle hey? most of which are removable. Were there any silver K1100's at all tiff do you know? After saying that I do like the dark graphite type colors, especially on these sort of bikes.
Cheers to you SugarHillCTD for the welcome...

The paint on the Suzuki was 2 pack, but basecoat and laquer all in the 1 tin. odd stuff, but nice finish and very very hard when it dried. You could buff it with 1000 grit then the G3 then the depth just popped out at you.
I've never seen a silver K1100, but K100's were common in silver I believe. Mine is Aspen silver which is really grey. I really like the anthracite though, and have enough of the Suzuki paint left to do the K.. Maybe we should just swap panels! |

Have you tried RS Bike Paint in Barnsley? They're on the web. Used them a couple of times for touch up and the match was perfect. _________________ '93 K1100LTSE, ABS1 in Black 'Connie' |

Got ya Tiff...lol on the swapping of panels. Yes I like the anthracite too, it does suit these bikes.
Well had a lovely ride this evening visiting a friend just the other side of Derby, 40 mls exactly from my home. I hit some heavy rain on the M1. It just worked out nice for me to try my new taller screen. I'm delighted indeed with the coverage and deflection it gives from the standard. Pleased I went for the extra height, as I'm 6 foot 4 tall and it does me justice. Also I can see through it as well...lol. Dare hardly touch the damn thing frightened of marking it. Going to try and be extra careful with this one as I've marked so many in the past. You've only got to look at them it seems and their marked. Will use a wet leather to remove the initial and the softest of cotton cloth I can lay my hands on. Failing using cloth, I'll just stick with the leather.
My return journey from Derby I enjoyed even better, travelling back in the dark. A lovely mild evening, very windy but nice dry roads and not too much traffic around. I don't mind the wind battering around, especially now with the new screen...lol
Tiff, one day in mid summer if you fancy a nice run down that A1 south to somewhere around Newcastle Sunderland area which will be somewhere in the region of 150 mls for you I should say, and the same for me, mid way between Nottingham and Fife, we could have a ride out and meet up for an hour, what do ya reckon? Let me do a bit of paint work first though.
Howdy BMW Mick, not tried RS Bike Paint in Barnsley. Could be a good proposition for me as Barnsley is only 35 mls from me.
More than likely go to my local car paint supplier and get sorted, not too bothered about the match as I'm in for painting all panels.
Just need some time to get stuck in now and as we know, bodywork can be that little bit time consuming. _________________ k1100 LT 1993 85,000 mls
