Hi all,
I have just stripped a fiends forks on his 1991 (ish) K1100RS.
He has owned the machine since 1994, and has never had the forks apart.
I have found one of the snap rings (on top of the seal) to be broken in half. No problem there, just fit a new one.
However, having removed the dampers I have found one seems to have a lot of up and down play when it is fully extended as if there is a bush or rubber 'O' ring missing. It also doesn't seem to have any resistance when pulled in and out, compared with the other leg which while offering minimal resistance, does does emit a 'fart', especially if the holes on the chamber are covered.
One other question. Given that I have stripped it down and cleaned out all the sludge, should I now fill both legs with the same amount of oil?
Regards

When doing a complete stripdown, both legs should be filled with 400 ml.
When carry out a drain only, the left leg should be filled with 350 ml, as 50 ml would be left in that damper cartridge.

Cheers Inge,
I thought as much, it was a little vague in the manual. Any idea on the damper cartridge question?

Sorry, can`t be to much help on that one, haven`t noticed any difference in play between the cartridges,
so can`t confirm if it`s normal or not.
Only what I know is that it should be different damping characteristic left/right.

Hi Inge,
Thanks - Blimey a K question you can't answer
Yes, I was aware of the different dampers, and made sure I kept the parts associated with the correct leg.
I have refitted the dampers, and am just waiting for the new fork seal retaining snap rings to arrive from Motorworks (hopefully today) to complete the rebuild.
The guy who owns the bike is a bit on the large size, but said that he thought the forks were working fine before the seals needed replacing. The chrome on the fork tubes still looks very good, as he fitted gaitors years ago. There was some crud in the legs, but all cleaned out now.
