Hi folks, thought I'd introduce myself Smile I'm Tiff, from Fife, and have just bough a K1100LTSE, from Mike who is also on here, so the bike shouldn't need an introduction!

I'm a garage instructor for a charity in Dundee, and teach young lads mechanic on cars and bikes which we repair and restore. For nearly 20 years before that I was a class 1,2,3,4 and 7 MOT tester and mechanic. I've owned 2 BMW bikes before, an R1100RS and a K100LT. I have done a few long hauls on them, the longest on the RS to central Poland.

This looks like a great forum, so expect to hear quite a bit from me Smile

Ditto the welcomes, i'll be on and off here still even though i'm now sans K bike.
I still like em immensely and wouldn't be remotely surprised if i'm tempted with another sometime in the future, ideally when I have better and larger storage facilities to keep it out of the weather.
(Always liked the red K1, hhhhmmmmmmmmmmm...)

OK, log off computer, do not go on ebay.........................

Hope the manuals coming in handy and one little thing I forgot to metion, (though you likely know?), the smaller plugs on the top yoke cover and by the coils I gave you the 2-1 adapter for, if you need any plugs to wire your accessories directly, you can buy them from caravanning shops.
(an old Skoda 130 taught me that, they use the same type plugs)

Well, the K is MOT'd. Very Happy No problems apart from a rear tyre on the limit,-new Conti on its way to me now. Now I'm getting used to riding a BIG bike again, I'm getting a huge hesitation and spluttering when cracking open the throttle when hot, so I'll have to break out the multimeter again tomorrow and check the TPS- seen this a few times on Fiats, which strangely use the same Bosch part! I do have a spare off an Uno Turbo if its needed.. I'll reset the Motronic, get the codes if any and then check and set the CO on the MOT meter and see if that cures it. Careful setting up made a HUGE difference to my R1100RS. I've also found the gear indicator/neutral light has a mind of its own- I was in 8th gear today Shocked Hd this with my RS too, and just needed to clean and set the switch.

Otherwise the past couple of days have been spent cleaning, polishing and painting- its looking really good! Pics will follow Smile

Good stuff, I knew the only sticky issue would be the rear tyre, I know it was technically an advisory, it was right on the limit but the tester could have gone either way.
My biggest headache MOT wise currently is my 40 mile trip to the MOT station has become a 140 mile trip due to a blocked landslided road, Sad

Bugger about the splutter, I guess several months sitting outdoors unused hasn't done it any favours in that department, handy being a common fiat part and you being a fiat nut though, what are the odds, Smile
Hope it's a quick and easy rectification, guessing you have access to all kinds of gear but I have a vacuum gauge if you're wanting to balance the throttle bodies after the TPS fiddle.

The splutter/miss seems to be gone- I read the codes, which came out as TPS and CO potentiomenter, and also the code which tells you the Motronic is in "limp" mode. Got the TPS set, cleared the code then set the CO. Ran the test again and got the good code 4444. Exhaust smells much better- was making my eyes water before.

Coming home gingerly in the rain after fitting the new back tyre, I gave it a handful in 5th- doing this yesterday caused it to bog down badly, and splutter/backfire, today it pulled cleanly even with the throttle wide open. On my 24 milerun home it didn't do it at all, so fingers crossed it's cured?

Had a bit of luck- took the wheel and tyre over to another garage to borrow their tyre changer, and had to use pliers to get the stuck metal dust cap off. changed the tyre and inflated the new one. Just about 35psi the centre of the valve blew out, not the core- the metal shaft of the valve Confused

Luckily I managed to get a new valve, so no great hassle, but lucky this didn't happen on the road. Please don't use metal valve caps that don't have a plastic insert!!

Thamks for the offer of the gauges! I still have my homemade ones from my R1100, will have to make another for the extra 2 cylinders.

LOL, he'd better not have gone the other way- I'm a bike tester too, and worked with the guy at the MOT station. He knows that I know the manual inside out. He also knows I like my bikes to be 100%

That's good, the way you describe it pulling is exactly as I recall, it would pull in top from 30 with me and a passenger no problem and overtakes were a quick gear down and go and it'd just go, no hesitation, all the while I had it parked the motronic plug was disconnected, don't know if this maybe had somehting to do with it? (certainly something to bear in mind if I ever do get another k bike) I used it, as said as an extra security precaution if I parked in inverness / glasgow etc.
Re the valves, I always replace the valve, for the sake of part thats costs a couple of pounds and having had a dodgy one left in one of my other bikes in the past it's just not worth it, I usually buy valves in bags of about 50, store them cool and dark and they're good for a while, work out about 50p or so each that way.
The front tyre valve was replaced with the tyre BTW so you know for your peace of mind after the rear.

You might want to put some fuel injector cleaner in there for a tank or so, like Techron or similar. Probably just running and being used regularly will do the most good.

I've heard the Motoronic brains reset after being disconnected and have to "relearn" new data, so it's probably best that it's been reset.

If we hadn't said it already, a fresh, proper battery will save you loads of trouble and concern. These bikes like their juice in top notch condition, although I get five years out of a battery if it's kept on a tender.

As my local shop once said, "These bikes don't like to sit....run 'em!"

I've done about 400 miles on the bike now, and its 100% cured- I reset the TPS again, a little lower, and that cured the slight backfiring I was getting on the overrun, and tweaked the CO to 1.5%. It now pulls hard, runs smooth and is getting 180+ miles from a tank. Codes checked again this afternoon and all I got was the good 4444. Smile It does like the V Power- runns smoother with it, even if its a little more expensive, I'll be carrying on with it.


Just the gear position indicator to sort now- have to get mtoivated to pull the swingarm off and repair it, along with a spline lube. The big green neutral light is blinding me at night!

If the green neutral light is bothering you that much, you could just unplug the intermidiate connector behind the right side panel. 4 wires- Brown, and 3 yellow wires with black, blue and white stripes.

I would have to do some looking but I seem to remember someone posting a pinout/test procedure for that gear position indicator.
Before you go to the trouble of tearing it all apart, just to make sure that's where the trouble is. Most likely but you never know......

Thanks Scott, I did come across the info on ibmwr, and the indicator and light are fine, just the switch on the gearbox giving faulty readings. My R1100 did the same, and careful cleaning and a lube had it working again- just a pain to get to!

Well, the swing arm has been off, the gear indicator switch removed,cleaned and refitted, and now I have the correct indication in all gears, apart from 4th! which is blank Rolling Eyes At least now I don't have the big green glare in my face at night Very Happy . Driveshaft splines were in good nick, with signs of lube still on them,swingarm bearings are fine,and got the chance to coppaslip some bolts, and replace others with stainless.The exhaust has been welded up- only 3 broken studs Confused . Its holding for now and sounds much better. Plenty of power, perfect idle and last 2 tanks (including running for setting up and adjustment) 47.6 MPG. Still not happy with wet grip though, have had a couple of minor slides, and don't have much confidence when its wet. Rear Conti GO has about 400 miles on it now, so should be scrubbed in by now. Will do the handlebar mod this weekend as it has too much movement in the bars for my liking.
