| Traded by cruiser of a 1993 k1100Lt......First thing I noticed was that little hole at the front of the oil pan is leaking a small amount of oil......Hum? Second thing is I was riding it yesterday and had come to a stop. When it was time to go I put her in first and nothing......like the clutch was gone....Pulled over into parking lot and stopped the bike....Started it back up put her in 1st and it was like it was trying to catch the gear but slipping, sorta moving the bike, then it caught and everything was fine....Love the bike, a little worried about maintenance issues since the BMW dealership in Little Rock closed. Hope to put many miles on bike. It only has 30000 miles on it right now. |

Does it seem like the clutch isn't engaging? or does it seem more like the trans isn't shifting into gear.
Im thinking that possibly the clutch pivot arm sticking or hanging up, or a hunk of debris(rock or something) stuck in the arm area. It's happened before. _________________ Ride safe.

| it's like the clutch cable is sticking, or clutch not engaging.....Do you know if the clutch works related to amount of oil in engine? thanks |

The clutch is dry. The engine oil is for the engine only. Same with transmission and final drive - fluids are all separate.
Like Scott said, check down at the clutch arm to see if there's a rock or something causing it to hang up.
Need a new cable? They don't cost that much, and they're easy to replace. I always keep a spare on the bike. _________________ Jim

Faint possibility - I wonder if there might be a problem with a selector fork in the gearbox? _________________ David, owner of:

Look at the clutch cable at the handlebar lever end. They are known to fray and break at that end. As the cable starts to fray it can hang up and not work right.
The last time I had one starting to break, as the strands were breaking the cable was stretching so it was harder to shift as the clutch wasn't disengaging enough.
The general cause of cable breakage at the handlebar end is age and lack of lubrication of the brass barrel adapter that is in the handle. Silicone spray works best. _________________ Ride safe.

another possibility is a P.O. may have lubed the clutch cable, which is a big, fat, hairy no-no on these bikes.
They have a teflon-like lining in the cable sheath that doesn't take kindly to cable lubes.
I'd check the tranny end of the clutch cable to make sure that arm is working freely then move to with the easy-to-replace/cheap stuff like a new clutch cable. Lastly would be pull the tranny and check the clutch splines and tranny input shaft.
Just my $.02
Oh and Welcome to the k1100 family! I hope your bike is as much fun to ride as mine is... _________________ '02 - GL1800
