|
|
| Just got a used K1000lt. 1993,30,000 miles. Didn't come with owners manual.. First ride I came back and noticed a small amount of oil on the ground. It was coming from the little hole at the front of the oil pan. The owner has just changed the oil before I got the bike.....My question is, when the bike is straight up, what should I see for oil level in the window? Is it suppose to be totally covering the sight window of straight accross halfway full? Appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks..... |

Hi,
The oil leak at the weep hole means the oil/water pump seals need to be renewed. The oil should NOT totally cover the sight glass. The level should be between the top and bottom of the circle on the sight glass. When I change oil, I try to add until the oil level is midway on the sight glass. If you use 4 qt. of oil at the change, the level will be too high. _________________ Ride Safe,

As Phil said, you need to rebuild your oil pump. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.

I check my oil on the centerstand before I start it up. I try to keep it near half way but don't worry if its 3/4 full. You want to see some air. _________________ 93 K1100LT

Should be a red dot snack in the middle of the sight glass, aim for this height on mainstand.
As others have said, oil/water pump seals, need replacing, check the gear shaft for excessive corrosion on rebuild on the water side, if badly pitted this will need replacing too.
Otherwise it's straightforward and rebuild kit is cheap, you'll need some high temp silicon sealer too to refit the unit.
Check my how to videos here.

As you tear into the oil/water pump for a rebuild, CAREFULLY read this post from John.

There is a small oil passage that can be blocked with gasket sealer. _________________ Ride safe.

The old bushing is too long for the new parts - you can grind it down. _________________ Jim

Buy a new one, it's not an expensive part. The shaft (11411461793) is expensive but if it is worn where the seals are, you have to change it. _________________ I am not a number, I am a free man.
