Very strange thing with my k1100rs (1996, 16k km).
Oil temperature light came up, oil was really overheated. Pressure light bulb and oil level was ok, cooling works fine, but it's cycle became a bit faster.
Made oil/oilfilter replacement, problem remains. Pressure light stays off after test. Seems that both liquid/oil pumps work.
What could it be? Anyone faced the same? Thanks. |

Oil temperature??? That would be a strange thing.
I don't have an RS, I have an LT - but none of the K bikes I've ridden have had an oil temperature light. Is this aftermarket?
You should have a low oil pressure warning light. _________________ Jim

Or it was the water temperature warning light?
If your fan did not start in front of this, check for a seized fan.

Oh sh.... Anyone have a owner (not repair) manual please? It's the right dash, right-bottom red light.
Now I guess I was mislead by both alert and temp gauge. The fan works, switches and stays onstantly on after an alert. But water temp goes between middle and top values and vary.
Funny, the brick is new to me, while at the end of trip, this happened and I thought it's an oil issue. It's a damn shitty control window, I added almost 1L extra and the alert switched off for almost an hour.
I guess I know what to do now, will write back. |

Could be air in your cooling system, also check the level in the expansion tank under the seat.
And check the gaskets and valves in the filler cap.

Right side (Tachometer) right-bottom red light.
That is the high water temperature indicator.
I would first suspect the radiator cap is faulty and not holding pressure. _________________ John & Cathy

That was the solution when this happened to me too - I changed the coolant as it was over two years old and in need (easy and inexpensive) and replaced the shockingly affordable for OEM BMW radiator cap. _________________

Hi again and thanks for the comments. Yes, only third of the coolant was there.
I hope it's not mostly about the cap, but there is another thing. While adding new coolant almost 250 grams immediately dripped through the drain at the engine front. 2sec between drops, up to a thin stream. It seems it finally stopped 5 minutes after a fill. But after engine test it started hard again and stopped something 5 minutes after engine choke. And, yes it repeats after each start only not so hard. So, the final filling was certainly done.
So the question is, what it could be. This does not seem nornal (for a jap owner). Is there a valve supposed to be in the drain hole or something? Thanks

There is no drain. Coolant coming out a weep hole probably means failed seals in the water/oil pump. _________________ '93 K1100RS

| It's not about the pump or sensor. It's the hole in front of an engine which points to the bottom. Normally hidden by lower fairing. I've read about this problem (coolant loose) already. |

When the caps on my K's have leaked I've just replaced the rubber seal inside the cap. Costs nect to nothing, is available as a seperate item.

+1 It is time to rebuild the water/oil pump. _________________ Doug
