OK so considering the teething and ongoing troubles with all the new models since K11's perhaps we should run a pool on which bit will break first....
I say drive train or gearbox _________________ K1100RS '97

On second thought, the 1600 is BIG and HEAVY.
Just received the June issue of Cycle World. They rode and reviewed both of the new 6 cylinder K bikes.
WOW, the GTL is 100 pounds heavier than the '09 C-14 Concours (GTR1400) that I had last season. And I thought the Kawasaki was too heavy.
But Rydor thought it at least felt light. And the reviewers agreed, one saying in a joking manner that it feels like the bike has power steering and the weight disappears at speed. Sounds good.
We'll see who is the first OG personality to own one of these. Hmmmmm.
My bet is Mike and Missy....... _________________ John & Cathy

Ernie nails it for me too;

I reckon the dash look like sh!@...
Ugly ducklings come easily out of the Fatherland... it's function over form usually.... but sometimes the bikes look good after a while....
The early Porsches look good too.... and the long hooded Mercs, but the bmw cars don't look much to me.
I have come to like the look of the K12rs/gt but it took a while
Yup the Gremlins will be alive n well after a bit of corrosion hits the ground wires, but I guess it's all canbus.

I rode one the other day, and I am smitten. Easily the best riding "big bike" I have ever been on. When I got back on the K1100RS I kept wanting the almost "flickability" that the K1600 has which the K11 does not have. Looks really don't matter to me , I can't see it when I am riding it.
There is no way I can afford one of these puppies, so I will do what I always do, wait 10 years to buy one. MY K11 should last that long. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

That's right
Mind you the K12RS is pretty flickable at 30mph it's as easy to salom as my lil R65LS airhead.
Looks don't really matter, you are quite right, it is engineering that makes a bike good or not.

they just got in a demo k16 at our local..and i have to say it is impressive, id put the static weight between a k11lt and a k12lt....but on the road is a whole different beast.....light and sporty...the big rear(190) tire helps make it fell a little less front end heavy....
all the lugage comes off too, so its posible the thing could be in the mid 6's..naked...if you have spent any time on a luxo-tourer....this thing is revolutionary.....
now if they could make a model sans all the techno crap..... |

Yup and it will take em at least five years to iron out the inevitable half a dozen bugs...
Should be fine by then, with a little 'flubber' for anti gravity effect.. |

I rode one (GTL) last weekend also. Not for me, especially with the $26,400.00 price tag. The excess wind hitting my hands was very noticeable. The numbers on the Speedometer were much too small for me to read easily. I also noticed some back lash in the drive train. It did handle well and had gobbs of power. _________________ Lifes too short to ride an ugly Motorcycle |

Prolly not meant to notice speedo data, just FULL power, and that eliminates the lash as well...
Five years, of bug ironing, and electric will prolly beat it.

BMW should be ashamed to have put on the public market such an over engineered and breakdown prone machine. To call it a K is ridiculous. _________________ Communique via Garmin ZUMO 665 via HTC DROID Incredible ADR6300 via The Spoken Word Talk to Text |

Reading about the K16 and actually riding it in everyday usage is a different thing. Lets get some input from a new owner....although few will admit to making a $26k mistake.
I have a K1200GT (2nd gen) and its a great bike...does all that I ask of it...fast, two up touring, perfect...except for....
the lousy, terrible, bad BMW engineering.
Timing chain can slip and destroy engine, Software for fuel delivery is all wrong, air box design made with counter type materials so it creates air delivery problems, can stall at any time, for-ever rear gear oil ain't, rear drive failures, seat pans crack, transmission is horrible (clunk, clunk)
Oh did I mention its a great bike....too bad BMW decided to drop it after only 5 years...seems they knew what they did too.
Now about that K16.....better wait a while. _________________ Mike Gullery

Holy shite, I have the last of the k12gt with K41 engine, classic brick and I have no problems at all and I do all my own servicing including tappet clearances.
I thought the K12 second gen was a bit better than what you say.
It does take a long time to iron out bugs, my bike is the end product of 21 years of feedback and debugging.
Maybe it is not sooo light and sooo fast but it flies and is smooooth and stops on a dime.

I also had an 07 1200 GT, great bike but in the back of my mind I keep worrying about all of those little issues. My wife and I never felt that comfortable on it so we traded it for a 09 1200 LT and put 20,000 miles on it 4 months. Machines break I know that but, I feel much more confident on a bike that has been around for decades. I never say never, so a GTL could be in my future. I'll keep an eye on it's track record and see how it fares in a few years. _________________ Former WVMSFKRS

Way to go.
I have done lots of research into the K bikes, and know a lot about what went right and what went wrong and how the factory tried to keep us happy with various fixes and mods.
The gearbox on this last of the classic K is silky, the motor totally grunts n runs cool and blasts the heat away from me, the suspension is stable on the road and loves grave and dirt.
I used to have a R69S and it had leading arm front suspension and was an enduro classic, this one feels similarly well planted in the gravel and ruts.
Enjoy your riding season Folks
We are still riding here in winter
