K11OG'ers:

On a recent ride I observed a "burning oil" smell and diagnosed the problem as transmission oil leaking onto the exhaust. The leak seemed to come from the rubber boot at the clutch release mechanism. I got the boot off and to my surprise, I could not find any tears, cracks, or other signs of wear. Before I invest in a new boot, can anyone shed light on other possible culprits? I was also surprised that there was no seal where the adjuster bolt (and lock nut) threads into the release lever...I plan on at least putting some teflon tape on the bolt threads.

Bike is a '93 K11RS. Thanks in advance.

Hello!

In my case a leak was around the ring which seats in realise lever. If you look closely you will notice that there is a kind of metal lip that sets on lever, around the part through the bolt goes.
I have replaced the boot, and bought a thin rubber oring to put between the booth and the lever. Yet new one is dry.
Thread is not an issue, when one tight the bolt and counter nut, the thread is squeezed so there is no chance for a leak.

I'm in the process of replacing all the seals on my transmission, which includes the clutch pushrod seal, #12 in the diagram. http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMid/B0000548.png?v=03252011

This may be the culprit causing the leak. Transmission oil gets past this seal into the throwout bearing, into the rubber boot.

Pictures of the process to follow in the next few days.

This one prevents oil from going to the clutch through the pushrod.

Thanks forum.

Getlunch, I hadn't even considered that trans oil should not normally reach the boot. But my assembly looks like this:

Can you tell me which component performs the oil seal?

It is normal for oil to be inside the boot, to lubricate part #'s 2 & 3.
There is a seal ring on the push rod(I don't see it identified on that picture) that is to prevent the oil from migrating up the rod towards(forward) to the clutch area.

Thanks Scott. If the pushrod seal keeps oil from moving toward the clutch (front of the bike), it sounds like I should replace the rubber boot if I am leaking oil onto my exhaust pipe. Even though I cannot find visual defects on the boot, I will arrange to replace it.

If this is incorrect please advise!

As per Scott's, the seal holds the oil in the aft area of the actuator pin area, where it is needed for lubrication of the thrust bearing that is fitted there. There is a small area where oil can overflow from the gearbox into the aft bit and thus keeps the area in way of the clutch booth filled with oil.
