I read the tech/mod section regarding the mirror tethers made of stainless wire. I thought it was a good idea but with one drawback: even though the mirror will stay attached, it will be hating on the upper fairing and paint.

So I substitued thin elastic shock chord for the wire and voila! The chord will keep the mirror under constant tension, even when attached to the fairing.

No pics but thought I would throw the suggestion out here Very Happy

I can attest to this.

Did the same thing.

Removed the yellow signat lens. Used some thin bungy cord from a cargo net. Made a loop, connected this to the inside mount on the mirror, fed the other end though the hole in the middle of the steel support plate, then just wrapped it around the fairinig mount & tied it off.
Holds the mirror on nice & snug, but if you walk by the bike and hit the mirror it it will flex enough to come off the mounts but does not hang & bang around.
I think more damage MIGHT occur in s full blown fall/tip over, but that would probably happen anyway.

I had my right mirror come off while riding. It's leashed with a stainless fishing leader. No damage but I think with the bungee stuff you could probably keep riding and not have to pull over ASAP. I think I'll do that when I give it it's 50k head to toe next month.

+1 on that.

If the mirror posts are a little worn the bungy keeps the mirror semi positioned. You
Can't use it much as it is way out of alignment, but it' s also not banging around.
The base of the mirror is close to a triangle and it the mirror stays on
The bike after flexing with the bungee.
I know first hand.
I had tethers on my bike. Also had a missing pin on the mount plate from the PO.
I only needed one in traffic at speed experience with the mirror dropping and swinging
Before I added the bungee cord. I eventually replaced the base plate, but I still use the
Bungee cord method.

Right after I bought the LT I had a mirror come of at a little above the posted speed. Luck was with me and I found the mirror on the side of the road. Two of the tabs on the clip/cup were missing. I was not able to fine new ones, BMW said "not available separately". I replaced all the cups with magnets and installed a tether on both mirrors. Problem solved. It takes a good smack to dismount the mirror, but they sure won't blow off at take speed any more.
