So we all know someone who as been maimed, killed (sorry peterc yep I mean Ross), whatever, but we keep riding the stupid things. I was sitting in my mancave just now checking the size of my idle jets and realized I had the 2 most gorgeous bikes you can have. Sorry all but unless you can afford an old MV then you are like me. The K1100RS is a fantastic bike, as is the RGS if I can get the fucker to run right. And guess what they're both in my garage, how lucky is that!!...along with the obligatory beer fridge of course.

So why do we keep riding when we know it's not a good thing. For me it's not really a freedom thing, boots, kevlar jeans and jackets, gloves, helmets etc, lot of work to go for a ride, but it's just so mentally releasing....Smile

Not expecting any reply.

Cheers

Yeah, a friend of ours was riding his airhead and had a fatal collision with a moose-

But I ride to leave everything behind. I ride to see different places. I ride to get lost on back roads.

Dangerous, sure. But dying from a dull life is much worse.

My grandmother had her hip seriously injured riding in a car. Should I stop riding in cars?

Use this.

A few years back I had an epiphany.

The point had come in my life where I'd lost more people I know to cancer, than I ever have to a motorcycle injury. And I've been onsite for some really bad ones indeed.

I don't argue about it anymore with anyone. Always happy to discuss it, just not argue.

So many way's to die, so little time to ride.

" You can die walking your doggy! "

Was in a movie, never forget it, never forget the ones lost, ride for them, ride till you can't.

CMA has something that might help:

http://www.cmausa.org/ride_plan/

Well it won't help avoid the peril or avoid the 'war stories' but might focus on final destination. Enjoy the ride until then.

I keep riding because the reward outweighs the risk.

I thought it was a clever play combining motorcycle and notorious.

But with drikko at the keyboard it looks more like a clever play combining beer and.....beer Laughing Rolling Eyes Laughing

I have been looking at some stats. Looks like one death in about 2.5 million miles driven.

Odds are better if; you use a helmet, use a face shield, take extra caution around intersections, don't drive drunk, and if you can keep the brakes from locking up (I gotta get that ABS working on mine:) .

Somewhere there should be tables (actuary lists that insurers use to tell the risk). I'm betting that being a grocery-getter in a soccer-mom-van has risks too. It would be interesting to see how things actually stack up.

Hello all...

Well, "driko's" comment re the dangers and risk of losing one's life does provoke thought, but for me: my five bikes and all the riding is just what keeps this 68 year old body, feeling and acting like it's eternally 35 ! Were it not for the rides, and joy of new sights around every turn, I for one would degenerate rapidly. Just pay attention to every cager you encounter, think ahead, be as conspicuous as possible, avoid the risks you know are there...and enjoy the riders life as no other !

Best regards all and ride safe !............// Ernie in NH

Ernie, thanks for your thoughts here. I think we've lived parallel lives on motorcycles. Although I'm a long way aways down here in Texas, I'd sure love you to show me the backroads of your lovely state of New Hampshire some day.

Riding engages brain. May slow aging process. Prevents Alzheimer's.

What an awesome, thoughtful, sensible bunch of people you are. Proud to know you....

There's some insights above I hadn't thought of, especially the 'more mates died of cancer than motorbikes'.

Unfortunately in the next few months that will be the case with me too. My best friend ever looks like succumbing to brain cancer. dammit....

Took him for a ride recently. And a beer of course.

Hey "dwerbil"...

You know any time you've got a hankering to ride on up, I'm absolutely positive that between John ( aka Sugarhill ), Jim ( aka: Saltcreek ), me, and our K-brothers from VT, there'll be no problem to show you as many "frost heaved" and "broken" back roads as you may care to ride ! Just be sure to bring a good supply of Monkey-Butt powder and Prep-H as you can pack !

Who knows, the bunch of us may just get on down to TX to sponge off Phil ( aka PhilMarvin ) one of these days,,,and you can show us your fine Texas scenery at the same time !

Good luck, and please ride safe !........// Ernie in NH

About 35 years ago, a little group of mates started a motorcyle club. 35 years later, we are all still in touch.

Seeing a bike stopped by the side of the road, pulling over and asking if everything is ok. And visa versa.

Being in a different country, different language, not even understanding it, but having a few beers with the bikers you have just met in a service station, just because we are there.

Just a few of many examples as to what motorcycling is about for me.

Cheers.

Rich.
