|
|
Got a set of front forks from Sanjiv in good condition, though he reported that one of them had a seal leak. So today we first replaced seals on both of them and then installed them on the '95 LT. Typical problems with the circlip but patience prevailed. Also found that while Phil's K75 PVC junction was off-size as a tool for seating the seals on the K11, the outer case from a roll of plumber's teflon tape worked quite well, thank you.
My two questions are these:
(l) We were conservative in recharging the shock oil, only adding 360 ml instead of the full 400. What are the consequences, in the short term, of running 40 ml short? (We're using 10w--and drat is it hard to find fork oil in El Paso).
(2) When replacing the ABS sensor, we used the same spacers even though it was a different fork. We're not sure of the reading we got on when we checked the gap. But the ABS lights cleared. Will an errant gap on the front sensor show up as an ABS fault, or are we good because the ABS test passed?
Thanks
Larry Johnson

1) It's going to be pretty soft when low on fork oil. Better too little than too much though.
2) If the ABS initializes OK when you move then you should be OK. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks, Drake.
We've got a syringe and will add more, probably in 20 ml increments. But the 10w will provide some compensation.

FWIW: I use red Honda 10W at the factory levels on my LT with stock springs and all is well. The RS has some aftermarket (Race Tech I believe) springs and acts like a pogo stick on the freeway if filled to factory quantities but rides fine with 10ml less.
Fork oil weights between manufacturers tend to vary a little between brands - at least that's what I've read in a few places on The Internet. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, Larry,
I have a few quarts of the BMW 7.5 wt. fork oil. If you'd like a quart, let me know. I'll be home for a couple of days on Thursday. _________________ Ride Safe,

Thanks, Phil. We're good with the 10W and next time I do a seal replacement I'll order the fork oil ahead of time. We're making great progress on the '95, replacing the front brake pads while we were in there. I think there's still a little misalignment of the fairing due to a drop by one of the earlier PO's, but we're not going to worry about that until we next have to take off the fairing.
Still staring at the '96 and plotting. I'm now thinking that the residue around the forks and on tire/wheel is from the front brake lines (which the PO had removed, along with the master cylinder). So there are two major elements on that bike: all of the innards for the gas tank and the front brakes. But that will probably be a project for later in the spring.
Be safe at the mines and on the way home.
